Position: Head Start - Inclusion Specialist

SUMMARY:

Under the direct oversight of the Disabilities & Mental Health Coordinator and in alignment with the Head Start Performance Standards, the Inclusion Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring that program services are accessible to families with children who have emotional or developmental challenges.

This role involves evaluating services and providing resources for both staff and families.

The Inclusion Specialist collaborates within a multidisciplinary team framework with other Head Start personnel, employing case-management strategies that integrate various service areas to address recognized disability and mental health issues affecting children.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Guarantees that children receive essential services provided by the program and external organizations.
  • Utilizes the designated Data Management System to monitor, track, and follow up on cases with identified concerns, including those children with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or other diagnosed special needs.
  • Ensures the implementation of the Multi-Disciplinary Team Intervention Plan and/or strategies, documenting progress in the agency's electronic tracking system.
  • Conducts onsite observations and follow-ups with identified children as necessary.
  • Monitors and tracks developmental and social-emotional screenings and re-screenings, ensuring compliance with 45-day requirements and agency timelines.
  • Coordinates with mental health professionals to address the mental health needs of children, families, and staff.
  • Facilitates or organizes training sessions for parents and staff regarding mental health and disability services to support children with special needs.
  • Schedules meetings with parents to discuss mental health/disability concerns, ensuring they are informed and comfortable with the referral process.

EDUCATION:

A Bachelor's degree in sociology, guidance and counseling, social work, or a related field is preferred; relevant work experience in human services/social services or child development may substitute for formal education.


EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience as a paraprofessional in a preschool, mental health, or social services setting is required. Additionally, two (2) years of administrative, leadership, and training supervisory experience is highly preferred.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

A valid California driver's license is required, along with access to a motor vehicle and proof of automobile liability insurance. Candidates must meet State health requirements, including passing a physical examination as a condition of employment and providing verification of TB clearance at the time of employment. A current CPR and Basic First Aid certificate, which the employee is responsible for maintaining throughout their employment, is also mandatory.
