Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

A Healthcare Support Specialist is responsible for executing administrative and select clinical tasks under the guidance of a licensed physician. The administrative responsibilities may encompass organizing appointments, managing patient records, and processing information for insurance claims. Clinical responsibilities may involve measuring and documenting vital signs, compiling medical histories, preparing patients for examinations, collecting blood samples, and administering medications as directed by the physician. Proficiency in this role also necessitates adherence to ethical and legal standards, recognition and response to emergencies, and the demonstration of professional attributes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify oneself as a Healthcare Support Specialist, verbally and by wearing a name badge at all times while on duty.
  • Under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, the Healthcare Support Specialist may undertake the following clinical responsibilities:
  • Provide basic healthcare or medical treatments.
  • Apply dressings, bandages, or splints.
  • Evaluate patients' physical conditions to assist in diagnosis or treatment.
  • Support practitioners in performing medical procedures.
  • Collect biological samples from patients.
  • Conduct diagnostic assessments to evaluate patient health.
  • Manage prescription refills or authorizations.
  • Dispose of biomedical waste in accordance with established standards.
  • Communicate technical medical information to patients.
  • Administer medications and perform non-intravenous injections.
  • Interview patients to gather pertinent medical information.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies or equipment.
  • Operate medical devices.
  • Perform office tasks including all general administrative duties.
  • Prepare medical instruments or equipment for use.
  • Organize patient treatment areas for use.
  • Compile medical billing information as instructed.
  • Document vital statistics or other health information.
  • Schedule patient procedures or appointments.
  • Sanitize patient rooms, treatment areas, and medical equipment as necessary.
  • Record all interactions related to patients in the electronic medical record.
  • Understand the limitations of the role as a Healthcare Support Specialist.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) certification.
  • Must hold and maintain Medical Assistant (MA) certification/registration, or any equivalent medical/clinical certification, registration, or licensure from an accredited organization.

  • Ability to collaborate with staff members at all levels in a cooperative, team-oriented manner.
  • Proficient in computer applications (i.e., PC Windows and MS Office) and capable of quickly learning new software. Preferred typing speed of 40 cwpm.
  • Fluent in English, both written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Exhibit active listening skills, understanding points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and refraining from interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and respect privacy considerations for patients and families.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Light Medium (exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally).
  • Standing/Walking: Occasionally; activity exists up to 50% of the time.
  • Keyboarding/Dexterity: Frequently; activity exists up to 50% of the time.
  • Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform constant repetitive hand and finger motions.
  • Must be mobile and work in various positions (standing, sitting, bending, and walking) for extended periods.
  • Effective verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Visual and auditory capabilities are required.

EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess adequate coping skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under workload or time constraints.
  • Capable of working under stress while maintaining professionalism.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Clinical back office setting.
  • Frequent and constant interruptions in daily functions/schedule.
  • Must be available to assist customers and staff throughout the day.
  • May be required to work extended hours to meet departmental needs.
