{"Job Title": "Academic Advisor", "Job Summary": "As a key member of the Center for Advising and Retention, the Academic Advisor will play a vital role in supporting the retention, progression, and graduation of students across multiple degree programs. This position will be responsible for executing an advising strategy that drives student engagement and empowers students to achieve their academic and career goals. The Advisor will serve as a frontline contact for undergraduate students, providing high-quality advising assistance and excellent customer service.

Responsibilities:

* Monitor and advise students on their academic progress, ensuring they meet degree requirements and stay on track for graduation.
* Collaborate with the Assistant Director and Director to develop and implement advising campaigns that promote student success.
* Provide fundamental level support to students, advising them on academic, career, and life goals.
* Make recommendations on academic advising matters to the Assistant Director.
* Advise students on academic programs, curricula, and course selections.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, making changes as necessary.
* Disseminate information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, and students.
* Provide assistance and advisement to students on program admission requirements, registration, probation, academic suspension, and other academic policies and procedures.
* Conduct orientation sessions for incoming students.
* Conduct informational outreach to various classes and student groups.
* Audit student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements.
* Follow up with students who have obtained failing midterm and final grades.
* Compare transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements, advising students on appropriate actions.
* Refer students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.
* Assist in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
* Evaluate and maintain student records for degree requirements using an academic evaluation system.
* Monitor student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
* Coordinate communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources, etc.

Requirements:

* Minimum of a bachelor's degree with 3-5 years in higher education.
* One (1) or more years of related work experience, preferably in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's degree with 3-5 years in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of student information systems (e.g., BANNER) is preferred.
* Knowledge of academic fields for advising disciplines.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with Degree Audit tools (DegreeWorks is preferred).
* Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective organizational skills and time management skills.
* Must be flexible and able to prioritize and function independently with minimal supervision.
* Must be able to work cooperatively and diplomatically with superiors, peers, students, and outside agencies.
* Ability to function with a diverse student population with varied academic backgrounds, special needs, and multicultural issues.
* Ability to work flexible schedules (some evenings and Saturdays are required).
* Ability to encourage and motivate students to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.
