Position Overview

The Bilingual Academic Advisor I operates under the guidance of the Director of Admissions and Advising, collaborating within a team to provide comprehensive support to a diverse student body in the College of Social Work (CSW). This role emphasizes a commitment to academic guidance, student retention, transfer processes, and enrollment services.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage an advising caseload, meeting with students to offer insights and assistance on academic matters, including graduation criteria and major selection.
  2. Facilitate students' academic journeys by assessing their needs and crafting tailored educational plans. Provide referrals for students requiring additional support, such as tutoring or career guidance.
  3. Utilize various communication methods to advise students, including in-person meetings, phone calls, video conferencing, and digital correspondence.
  4. Maintain accurate academic records for students, documenting advising interactions and progress.
  5. Engage in student recruitment initiatives and orientation programs for both students and their families.
  6. Employ degree tracking software and record-keeping systems to monitor student advancement.
  7. Actively participate in committees at both the College and University levels, contributing to discussions that influence curriculum and advising practices.
  8. Represent the advising office in campus-wide meetings and initiatives.
  9. Stay informed about University resources, critical deadlines, and policies, assisting in the implementation and evaluation of new procedures.
  10. Disseminate updates regarding major requirements and University policies to students, adjusting advising strategies as necessary.
  11. Engage with professional associations relevant to academic advising.
  12. Contribute to programming that supports student communities.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required. Candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to fulfill the essential functions of the role.

Preferred Skills

Fluency in both English and Spanish is essential.
