The Director of Hog Procurement plays a vital role in overseeing the hog procurement process, ensuring that our plants receive livestock supplies at competitive prices. This position leads a dedicated team responsible for the purchasing and receiving of livestock, ensuring compliance with company policies and USDA regulations. Collaboration with the Smithfield procurement team is essential to optimize hog supply purchasing. Building and maintaining strong relationships with hog producers and suppliers in the Midwest is crucial for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage hog procurement operations for Smithfield Fresh Pork Plants, providing leadership and development opportunities for staff across the Hog Procurement Team.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with hog producers and suppliers in the Midwest, fostering long-term partnerships.
  • Support and mentor the hog procurement team, assisting in contract negotiations and relationship-building with producers.
  • Collaborate with the Hog Procurement Management Team to identify key metrics for tracking performance and achieving business objectives.
  • Participate in the preparation of bids, proposals, and supplier agreements, ensuring compliance with obligations.
  • Promote adherence to plant-specific and regulatory compliance requirements among employees, suppliers, and truckers.
  • Gather and share industry intelligence to support the Hog Procurement Team in maintaining updated supplier information and market analysis.
  • Represent the Smithfield brand at industry meetings and conventions in the Midwest.
  • Analyze hog and pork markets to inform procurement strategies.
  • Leverage technology to identify opportunities for business improvement.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in animal science, agricultural business, economics, or a related field, along with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in team management and development.
  • Knowledge of the pork or food industry, with strong connections in the U.S. hog and pork sectors preferred.
  • Familiarity with accounting, inventory management, and procurement processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Willingness to travel 30% or more of the time.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role includes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, including hiring, training, and performance management.

Work Environment:

The work environment may involve exposure to varying conditions, including wet or humid environments, extreme temperatures, and moving machinery.
