About the Role:

Diverse Systems Group LLC is in search of seasoned Cartography Subject Matter Experts to contribute to a significant initiative aimed at developing alt text and comprehensive descriptions for a varied collection of maps. This project encompasses a range of map types, including topographic, trail, historical, and visitor guides. The SME will play a pivotal role in analyzing map content, guiding a team of writers, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, accessible descriptions for each map.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Map Analysis: Deliver expert analysis and interpretation of diverse maps within the organization’s portfolio, ensuring accurate representation of visual information in alt text and extended descriptions.
  • Outline Creation: Develop detailed outlines and summaries of map content to assist writers in crafting precise and effective alt text and extended descriptions.
  • Team Mentorship: Provide mentorship and training to a team of writers on best practices for creating alt text and extended descriptions, focusing on clear and accessible communication of complex cartographic information.
  • Quality Assurance: Perform quality assurance reviews of alt text and extended descriptions, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance with accessibility standards across all map types.
  • Editing and Feedback: Offer editing support and constructive feedback to writers to enhance and refine content prior to final submission.
  • Writing Contributions: Occasionally assist in writing alt text and extended descriptions, particularly for intricate or nuanced maps.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with project managers, writers, and other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met and that descriptions align with the mission of making all content accessible to the public.
  • Process Documentation: Create and maintain documentation of processes and best practices for map interpretation and description writing, continuously seeking improvements in quality and efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Cartography, Geography, GIS, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Experience: At least 5 years of experience in cartography, with expertise in various map types such as topographic, historical, trail, and visitor maps.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong skills in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and familiarity with map design principles. Knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards is highly valued.
  • Accessibility Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of accessibility requirements, particularly in creating content that adheres to WCAG standards.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, capable of explaining complex cartographic concepts to non-experts and collaborating effectively with a diverse team.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of meticulousness, ensuring accuracy in all aspects of map interpretation and description writing.
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, mentor a team, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diverse Map Expertise: Experience with a wide array of map types, including but not limited to topographic, trail, historical, and thematic maps.
  • Government Experience: Previous work experience with federal agencies, particularly in the context of public service or national parks.
