Healthcare Services
The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) provides extensive healthcare services throughout Maryland. Our physicians and care teams collaborate closely with specialists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine to deliver primary and specialty care across more than 150 locations statewide, accounting for 25% of all hospital-based care in Maryland.

Position Summary
The Healthcare Analytics Specialist will be an integral part of our Advanced Data Science team at UMMS, contributing to our goal of becoming a data-driven organization focused on outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, and Operations Research, along with a strong enthusiasm for analyzing healthcare data. A portfolio showcasing relevant projects is essential for this role. This position will report directly to the Director of Advanced Data Science & Consulting Services.

This role features a hybrid work model, promoting collaboration among interdisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate analytical initiatives aligned with the organization's strategic goals and clinical/business challenges.
  • Create predictive (machine learning and deep learning) and prescriptive (mathematical optimization and simulation) models to support clinical, operational, and business objectives.
  • Implement solutions that yield actionable insights and integrate seamlessly with existing application systems.
  • Collaborate with analytics teams and clinical/business stakeholders to develop and validate pilot projects.
  • Conduct statistical analyses to assess primary and secondary objectives from pilot initiatives.
  • Assist in crafting strategic, tactical, and operational presentations that summarize analytics project outcomes.
  • Enhance our analytics portfolio with comprehensive documentation.
  • Engage in innovative projects aimed at improving care quality, clinical outcomes, and operational efficiencies.
  • Support leadership in scaling successful initiatives across the organization and refining analytics applications based on user feedback.
  • Promote analytics literacy and adoption by sharing success stories and lessons learned.
  • Independently tackle complex problems using open-source tools and in-house development.
  • Stay updated on advancements in machine learning, AI, operations research, and statistical modeling.
Qualifications
  • PhD in applied mathematics, data science, computer science, engineering, statistics, economics, or a related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Preferred 3+ years of industry experience in Machine Learning, AI, or Operations Research.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, and R programming.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning problems and advanced statistical analysis.
  • Experience in developing and deploying predictive and prescriptive models relevant to healthcare.
  • Familiarity with text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) is advantageous.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to develop machine learning and deep learning algorithms for clinical and operational challenges.
  • Proficient in formulating and solving complex mathematical optimization problems.
  • Experience in exploratory data analysis and advanced statistical techniques.
  • Capable of designing and prototyping new functionalities for applications.
  • Skilled in handling real-world data, including data cleaning and transformation.
  • Effective communicator, able to present findings clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Adept at working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
