At Ports America, the Maintenance Operations Supervisor is tasked with managing the overnight maintenance activities throughout the organization. This role involves overseeing the upkeep of critical equipment, including cranes, vehicles, and reefer operations support. The supervisor will coordinate a variety of maintenance tasks, administer the Mainpac CMMS system, and address issues as they arise by mobilizing teams for effective resolution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety and functionality of all equipment, taking corrective measures as necessary.
  • Engage with Terminal and Marine management regarding maintenance concerns and ensure implementation of corrective actions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the overnight maintenance team.
  • Keep upper management informed of operational status through regular updates and reports.
  • Oversee the accuracy of inventory and maintenance systems to guarantee equipment availability.
  • Manage work order planning, prioritization, and administration within maintenance operations using Mainpac.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all engineering and maintenance activities during overnight operations, particularly for reefer-related tasks.
  • Facilitate effective communication between Maintenance, Terminal, and Marine operations to reduce equipment downtime.
  • Maintain positive labor relations to foster high morale and productivity among staff.
  • Collaborate with the Safety and Health Office to promptly address safety and health hazards and conduct regular safety meetings.
  • Implement accident prevention and safety programs, ensuring regular training and a decrease in incident frequency and severity.
  • Possess knowledge of union contracts and labor relations policies to promote positive relations and adherence to procedures.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of administrative tasks and reports for management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Be available for emergency situations that may arise outside of regular hours.
  • Verify labor records on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Prepare a variety of reports for both local and corporate purposes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience in management within a terminal or automotive service environment.
  • Proficiency in heavy equipment repair.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of practical experience in port or terminal operations managing equipment.
  • Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Previous experience supervising unionized labor.
  • Experience in budgeting and profit and loss management.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of general engineering principles, including mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.
  • Knowledge of terminal and stevedoring operations, particularly crane coordination with vessel activities.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, and specifications.
  • Familiarity with PLC and drive control systems, as well as container crane control and mechanical systems.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to positively influence team members.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety regulations and standards, including OSHA and National Electrical Code.
  • Thorough understanding of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly for complex technical issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management, labor, and clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a focus on internal customer service.
  • Solid management and team-building skills, particularly in a unionized environment.
  • Experience collaborating with operational management, financial managers, and commercial teams.
  • Strong understanding of IT systems in engineering and maintenance contexts.
  • Ability to utilize computerized maintenance and repair software.
  • Exceptional time management skills in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and thoughtfully to emergencies outside of regular shifts.
Physical Working Attributes:
  • Frequent walking, standing, and bending, with occasional sitting.
  • Ability to climb ladders multiple times during a shift.
  • Work in various environments, including ships and yards.
  • Adapt to changing weather conditions.
  • Work in proximity to moving machinery and equipment.
  • Awareness of potential hazards in environments with heavy equipment.
