Job Summary

Columbus State Community College is seeking a highly qualified and motivated instructor to teach African-American history survey. The successful candidate will participate in departmental and college-wide initiatives, demonstrate a willingness to collaborate across the institution, and provide academic advisement and student guidance.

Essential Job Functions
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled and assume primary responsibility for and exercise oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department's policies.
  • Design curriculum embracing diversity, in all forms, to foster talent in students while modeling inclusive teaching strategies.
  • Participate in the identification of students with academic or other needs and respond by utilizing an appropriate resource.
  • Use technology in a manner appropriate to the nature and objectives of courses and programs.
  • Maintain regular communication with adjunct instructors.
Student Engagement & Advisement
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and support for learners.
  • Maintain posted office hours in accordance with departmental and college policies.
  • Encourage a sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
Continuous Improvement
  • Promote continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning by assisting in the maintenance of instructional materials and laboratory facilities.
  • Participate in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
  • Provide feedback regarding the general operations of the department, division, and college.
Professional Development
  • Maintain a personal portfolio for tenure and promotion review and other career-related needs.
  • Contribute to the planning, evaluation, and/or presentation of college professional development programs.
Culture of Respect
  • Help ensure the college meets its responsibilities in identifying areas of opportunity and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and productive work and learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in African-American History or a related field with a concentration in History.
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching African-American History at the college level.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or Master's Degree in African-American History or American History with a concentration in African-American History (1619 to Present).
Additional License Requirements:
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
