Essential Job Functions
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled and assume primary responsibility for and exercise oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department's policies, ensuring both the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction.
  • Design curriculum embracing diversity, in all forms, to foster talent in students while modeling inclusive teaching strategies, with an understanding of the socio-cultural issues of traditionally underrepresented groups.
  • Participate in the identification of students with academic or other needs and respond by utilizing an appropriate resource.
  • Use technology in a manner appropriate to the nature and objectives of courses and programs and communicate clearly to students the expectations concerning the use of such technology.
  • Maintain regular communication with appropriate adjunct instructors.
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities for appropriate adjuncts.
  • Work with the department chair and fellow Lead Instructors on department policy and standards.
  • Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with the Faculty Handbook and departmental policies.
  • Maintain attendance records, determine and submit grades timely, and in accordance with established policies and procedures of the College, and communicate progress feedback as well as other relevant information to students throughout the semester.
  • Create and maintain accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, cross-college, and instructor requirements.
  • Participate in the selection of appropriate materials to support course curriculum in accordance with the College's guidelines.
  • Conduct classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule.
  • Employ and assist in the design and development of appropriate assessment techniques to measure students' performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
  • Be a facilitator of learning in a virtual environment.
Student Engagement & Advisement
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and support for learners.
  • Maintain posted office hours in accordance with departmental and policies of the College.
  • Use technology to assist in communication with students.
  • Encourage a sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Advise potential or current students within the discipline about the program, career, or transfer options available to assist with degree completion.
  • Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.
Continuous Improvement
  • Promote continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning by assisting, as appropriate, in the maintenance of instructional materials and laboratory facilities; contributing, as appropriate, to the development, selection, and improvement of instructional materials, laboratories, and other instructional facilities; providing guidance in the development, maintenance, and design of course description, course outlines, and syllabi; recommending modifications to the curriculum and participating in the design of new curricula.
  • Complete all mandatory performance evaluation measures within specified time limits and participate in all required training by the College.
  • Share best practices with colleagues in formal or informal settings.
  • Participate in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
  • Evaluate teaching and assessment practices to continue improving them.
  • Provide feedback, as appropriate, regarding the general operations of the department, division, and the College.
  • Participate, as appropriate, in the interviewing, selection, and orientation processes of department faculty and staff.
  • Provide advice and/or assistance to faculty within the department, division, or College.
  • Attend faculty meetings as called by the President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean, or Department Chairperson; and participate, as appropriate, on departmental and divisional committees.
Professional Development
  • Maintain a personal portfolio for tenure and promotion review and other career-related needs.
  • Employ student, administrative, and self-appraisals to establish goals and objectives for professional development, and participate in professional development activities.
  • Contribute, as appropriate, to the planning, evaluation, and/or presentation of college professional development programs.
  • Maintain required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing education hours as disciplinary standards dictate.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in African-American History or a related field with a concentration in History.
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching African-American History at the college level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or Master's Degree in African-American History or American History with a concentration in African-American History (1619 to Present).
  • Graduate study in related fields must focus on African American History research methods and historiography.
Additional License Requirements
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
Additional Information
  • Applicants must be willing to work with high school students and teachers to fulfill the college's commitment to College Credit Plus, which may require travel to central Ohio schools.
  • College Credit Plus (CCP) is Ohio's dual enrollment program that provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking courses from Ohio colleges or universities.
  • Depending on operational needs, faculty may be required to teach in College Credit Plus (CCP) programs.
  • 5/5 course load with 1 course release during the first two semesters.
  • Lead instructor duties come with a course release option.
  • College does not pay relocation expenses.
Salary Details

9 Month Instructor Salary - $49,560 - $55,507.20

Optional Summer Semester (Full Load): $16,000 - $20,000
