Position Summary:
The Director of Tribal Relations is tasked with managing the organization's interactions with Tribal Nations. This role is pivotal in nurturing and sustaining a collaborative and respectful relationship between the institution and federally recognized Tribal Nations that have historical connections to the region. The director will engage with various departments within the organization and tribal leaders to facilitate constructive dialogue aimed at enhancing awareness and appreciation of American Indian contributions to regional history. Additionally, the director will oversee the execution of the organization's American Indian Policy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the leading authority on American Indian Relations within the organization.
- Conduct an annual review of the organization's American Indian Policy and collaborate across departments to develop training and procedures that align with this policy.
- Serve as the primary contact for all staff and leadership regarding matters of American Indian Relations.
- Establish a clear strategy for annual initiatives, long-term objectives, and success metrics as outlined in the American Indian Policy.
- Coordinate and facilitate the Tribal Nations Conference, ensuring that the agenda addresses vital organizational issues and provides opportunities for staff to present and engage with Tribal representatives.
- Collaborate with external partners to organize and host the Tribal Nations Conference.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the organization by participating in leadership discussions.
- Advise on fundraising efforts for Ohio's first UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Provide guidance to the State Historic Preservation Office on matters concerning American Indian historic preservation.
- Participate in the oversight committee for the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
- Conduct outreach to Tribal Nations to maintain respectful and collaborative relationships.
- Oversee budget management, travel arrangements, and communication documentation related to the role.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field plus over ten years of related experience.
- A minimum of seven years of direct experience working with Tribal communities, ideally in a non-profit or governmental context.
- Proven success in fostering cross-organizational collaboration and team dynamics.
- In-depth understanding of North American Native history and Federal Indian policy.
- Experience with diverse American Indian tribal customs, traditions, and governmental relations.
Preferred Skills:
- Proven leadership in formulating and executing strategic plans.
- Ability to manage multiple programs and departments, quickly assessing situations and identifying solutions.
- Experience in project management, including planning, timeline setting, and deliverable completion.
- Skill in establishing and analyzing metrics for complex programs, focusing on continuous improvement.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on building partnerships.
- Excellent presentation capabilities.
- Experience in budget creation and management from various funding sources.
- Proficiency in office software and virtual platforms.
- Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
