Reporting To: Program Manager

Compensation: $21.00-$27.71 hourly, with an additional $1.75 per hour for shifts worked between 6 PM and 6 AM

Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday, 4 PM to 12:30 AM

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union

Probation Period: 90 days

Department Summary

The Youth Center caters to individuals up to 24 years old who are at risk of or currently facing homelessness. It provides a safe and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ youth, assisting them in transitioning from homelessness to stable housing. Services include meals, clothing, support groups, educational programs, employment training, case management, counseling, crisis shelter, and transitional living.

Role Summary

The Youth Support Specialist is responsible for providing direct supervision and care to members and residents of the Youth Center. This role involves being an after-hours presence for LGBTQ+ youth in the Center's Interim Housing programs, focusing on those who are currently or formerly homeless and may face various health and mental health challenges. The ideal candidate will have experience working with this demographic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement care goals and departmental protocols to ensure the safety of members and residents, utilizing crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Collaborate with the residential team to support case plan objectives through effective communication, housing searches, and referrals to educational, employment, health, and mental health resources.
  • Adhere to principles of housing-first, harm-reduction, and trauma-informed care.
  • Maintain a welcoming presence for members and residents, providing information and assistance as needed.
  • Monitor access to residential spaces, ensuring safety and compliance with program rules.
  • Assist in conflict resolution and de-escalation of inappropriate behavior among residents.
  • Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of the youth center and assist residents in maintaining their living areas.
  • Plan and facilitate engaging onsite activities and events using a Positive Youth Development framework.
  • Assess residents exhibiting severe mental health symptoms and coordinate with the Psychiatric Medical Response Team when necessary.
  • Respond to emergencies by contacting appropriate services, including police and medical assistance.
  • Document daily activities and any irregularities, including emergency incidents and unusual occurrences.
  • Follow established protocols for addressing disturbances and communicating with relevant staff regarding emergencies.
  • Support the residential team with documentation and data entry into internal systems.
  • Understand and address the specific personal and medical needs of residents to foster supportive relationships.
  • Participate in staff and planning meetings as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ+ community and understanding relevant issues.
  • A commitment to the Center's mission and values.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with youth facing homelessness, housing instability, or mental health challenges.
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing, Crisis Intervention, and Mental Health First Aid is preferred.
  • Experience in substance abuse case management and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to apply housing-first, harm-reduction, and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Availability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus (preferred: English/Spanish; American Sign Language is also beneficial).
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to maintain insurance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a multicultural setting.
