This position is situated within a Bariatric and General Surgery practice.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The incumbent will develop and execute the dietary support essential for the accurate diagnosis and management of health conditions for all patients referred to them.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Analyzes patient medical histories and physician directives.
  2. Assesses, advises, educates, and implements tailored nutritional strategies for patients with specific treatment and diagnostic requirements.
  3. Contributes to the formulation of care objectives, educational goals, practice standards, and programs to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans.
  4. Acts as a resource for staff regarding patient care strategies, established protocols, and procedures.
  5. Delivers educational sessions to patient groups focused on nutrition.
  6. Interprets dietary prescriptions, assesses their suitability, and initiates necessary adjustments.
  7. Collects and reviews historical and current dietary habits of assigned patients, documenting relevant findings in their medical records.
  8. Guides patients on necessary dietary modifications and how to assess the effectiveness of these changes.
  9. Prepares patients for reintegration into the community through ongoing education and referrals to suitable community resources.
  10. Records treatment provided and monitors patient progress and responses in medical documentation.
  11. Ensures timely and accurate documentation of patient information to maintain high-quality healthcare continuity.
  12. Assists in the thorough and accurate completion of patient encounter forms.
  13. Completes documentation in accordance with established protocols.
  14. Facilitates communication between patients and physicians as needed, ensuring prompt and courteous follow-up on patient inquiries.
  15. Conducts nutrition presentations and educational programs for patients and their families.
  16. Upholds strict confidentiality for both patients and employees in line with organizational guidelines.
  17. Ensures compliance with regulatory and reimbursement requirements as well as clinic care standards.
  18. Promotes the integration and enhancement of nutritional healthcare strategies within the organization.
  19. Supports other departments, attending meetings and training as required.
  20. Undertakes additional responsibilities as necessary.

Performance will be evaluated against established organizational values and metrics related to care management and educational outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

A Bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Completion of an accredited dietetic internship program is also necessary.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE:
Registered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Current CPR certification is required.

EXPERIENCE:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):
  1. Understanding of patient nutrition management procedures and policies relevant to the role.
  2. Proficient in medical terminology.
  3. Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  4. Skilled in using standard desktop and Windows-based systems, including electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including effective phone etiquette and public speaking abilities.
  6. Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  7. Ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills related to nutrition issues.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse organizational members and populations.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patient and organizational information.
  10. Knowledge of compliance aspects of clinical care and best practices in medical office operations.
  11. Willingness to travel to various office locations as needed.
  12. Successful completion of competency-based training within the introductory period.
PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
  1. Regularly engages in keyboarding, phone communication, and documentation.
  2. Extensive time spent working on a computer.
  3. May require walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling, and twisting.
  4. May involve lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 20 pounds.
  5. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  6. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment.
  7. Must possess hearing and speaking abilities to conduct business effectively.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

This role operates within a healthcare facility and involves regular movement throughout the premises. Employees will encounter patient care equipment and may be exposed to hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens. Interaction with patients in various emotional states is common, which may lead to competing priorities.
