Position Overview:
Under general supervision, the Research Grant Specialist III collaborates with the Department Manager and/or Principal Investigator (PI) to oversee and facilitate all aspects of pre- and post-award grant administration within the unit.
Key Responsibilities:
Acting as a liaison among various departments, research teams, Sponsored Research Funds Administration (SRFA), and finance departments, this role is crucial in ensuring smooth grant operations.
The Specialist is responsible for performing comprehensive pre- and post-award administrative tasks, which include:
- Reviewing technical sections of proposals to ensure compliance with requirements.
- Preparing and/or evaluating budgets for accuracy and completeness, leveraging knowledge of grant budgets and expenditure restrictions.
- Monitoring financial activities, conducting reconciliations, and preparing research-related financial reports for both federal and non-federal grants, ensuring adherence to regulations set by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Documentation and Compliance:
Responsible for preparing and routing internal documents for necessary signatures and processing. The Specialist collaborates with PIs and SRFA staff to ensure timely submission of all required deliverables, including:
- Federal Financial Reports (FFRs)
- No Cost Extensions
- Carry Forward of Funds
- Execution of subcontracts
Financial Management:
Independently conducts all pre-award and post-award financial projections, account reconciliations, cost transfers, progress reports, budget modifications, salary allocation reviews, and time and effort management reporting.
Additionally, the Specialist performs financial analysis and forecasting to identify variances, develop logical conclusions, and propose alternative solutions as necessary.
Grant Review and Mentorship:
This role involves reviewing grant applications and managing post-award activities, developing innovative solutions to complex problems, and providing actionable recommendations to leadership.
The Specialist also oversees all deliverables, including invoices and subcontract documentation, while ensuring fiscal responsibility for salaries, supply costs, and subcontracts. Mentorship and training of grant management staff are also key components of this position.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with a solid understanding of federal and major funding agency grant submission guidelines. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in pre- and post-award research grant management or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A High School Diploma or GED is mandatory, while a Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
