Position Overview

Reports To: Head Family Worker

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (Weekends as required)

Work Hours: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (Hours may vary)

Role Summary

The Family Support Specialist is responsible for executing objectives, policies, and initiatives aimed at fulfilling the social service component performance standards as specified in the management plans of the Head Start Program, under the supervision of the Site Director. This role provides essential services in mental health, social services, family engagement, special needs, and community collaboration in alignment with Head Start performance standards.

Key Responsibilities

Parent Communication:

  • Facilitate family intakes, assisting parents with the completion of applications and re-evaluations for various services.
  • Organize parent meetings, workshops, and volunteer activities, supporting parent committee officers in implementing Head Start programs.
  • Act as a liaison between parents and Site Directors, conveying relevant information to families.
  • Foster relationships with families to promote their active participation.
  • Empower families through the family partnership agreement process.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and scheduling of parent volunteers.
  • Keep staff informed of parental concerns and assist in creating a comprehensive plan for family involvement across all service areas.
  • Support parents in planning and scheduling their social and developmental activities, addressing community needs.
  • Coordinate and implement family reviews.
  • Develop and execute recruitment strategies.

Documentation Management:

  • Maintain accurate documentation for all family interactions within eligibility, enrollment, health, social service, and education records.

Administrative Duties:

  • Collaborate closely with the Site Director and other specialists.
  • Facilitate follow-up care for children and families with medical, dental, and mental health providers.
  • Participate actively in various meetings, including management, teaching team, center, committee, and board meetings.
  • For children with special needs, coordinate services with parents and relevant agencies.
  • Engage in professional development through trainings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Provide general administrative support as directed by the Site Director.

Community Relations:

  • Establish and nurture community partnerships by collaborating with the Site Director to develop relationships with social service agencies and local organizations.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or a related field from an accredited institution.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality.
  • Detail-oriented with a logical approach to problem-solving.
  • Proficient in using word-processing software.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Language Proficiency:

  • Proficient in reading English; bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to communicate verbally and audibly.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and using hands for various tasks.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to see at close range and perform fine hand manipulation.

Work Environment:

  • Typical office setting with moderate to high noise levels.
