Position Overview

The Director of Strategic Communications plays a pivotal role in enhancing the Institute's visibility and impact through effective communication strategies, media relations, and brand stewardship. This individual will design and implement comprehensive communication plans that promote the Institute's mission, lead a team of communication specialists, and integrate innovative public relations strategies to engage new audiences and foster organizational growth. The Director will also formulate strategic communication objectives, collaborate with leadership on evolving program and brand strategies, and oversee the Institute's expansion across social media and international platforms.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Communications:
  • Collaborate with the CEO and program leaders to develop and execute a comprehensive communications and external affairs strategy, defining both short- and long-term goals to advance the Institute's mission and increase awareness of its initiatives.
  • Work alongside the CEO and program Directors to refine and enhance the Institute's brand strategy and messaging framework.
  • Lead initiatives to identify and engage new audiences, utilizing data-driven insights and innovative methodologies.
  • Partner with the Director of Development to create and implement amplification campaigns, donor engagement strategies, and public events, engaging external partners and consultants.
  • Organize and promote high-profile public relations events, managing the editorial calendar for timely execution of all communication activities.
  • Ensure collaboration between communications and other departments, providing necessary support for priority projects and campaigns.
  • Foster positive internal communications to keep all staff informed and promote a collaborative environment.
  • Dedicate 25% of this role to the Design for Transformation program, delivering a comprehensive global narrative and storytelling initiative in collaboration with external agencies, global partners, and funders.
Public Relations:
  • Advocate for the Institute's brand, ensuring a strong and consistent presence both internally and externally.
  • Oversee the Institute's social media strategy, focusing on audience growth and engagement, while expanding distribution channels and media contacts.
  • Lead media relations efforts, acting as the primary contact for media inquiries and managing publicity campaigns.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of internal and external communication tools and platforms across the organization.
Management:
  • Develop and manage a communications budget, including forecasting requirements and coordinating creative services for communication materials.
  • Oversee the production of key communication assets, including annual reports, development collateral, digital content, and media materials.
  • Manage direct reports, participating in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new communications staff.
  • Seek opportunities to streamline communication operations and enhance team productivity.
  • Set clear job expectations and evaluate performance, culminating in an annual written performance review.
  • Lead, mentor, and support the professional development of the team.
  • Create Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for independent contractor services.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with over 10 years of combined experience in communications, marketing, and/or public relations.
  • Experience in brand management, media relations, and digital amplification of mission-driven programs is advantageous.
  • Proficient in synthesizing and disseminating information through various distribution channels.
  • Strong understanding of the social media landscape, with a focus on community engagement.
  • Knowledge of biomimicry is essential; if not already trained, advanced training must be completed.
