Overview:

At the ASPCA's Cruelty Recovery Center (CRC), located in Columbus, Ohio, a committed group of professionals in sheltering, veterinary care, and animal behavior collaborate to assist animals rescued from national cruelty incidents and disaster situations.

This team works in conjunction with various ASPCA departments, including National Field Response, Veterinary Forensics, Legal Advocacy & Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, and Shelter Medicine Services, to ensure seamless operations and comprehensive care for animals affected by neglect, abuse, and natural disasters.

The CRC team also provides support for animals housed in temporary field shelters managed by the ASPCA.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) is a qualified and certified veterinary technician who collaborates with veterinarians and other staff to provide exceptional veterinary services.

The LVT will deliver empathetic nursing care and assist CRC veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and diagnostic procedures, adhering to low-stress handling techniques and best practices in shelter medicine.

This position will also support the Veterinary Forensics team as necessary, aiding in examinations and evidence collection for animal cruelty investigations.

The LVT will split their time between direct care for sheltered animals at the CRC facility and supporting animals in foster care and field operations, depending on team requirements.


Key Responsibilities:


Responsibilities encompass but are not limited to:

  • Nursing Care and Veterinary Support (65%): Deliver compassionate and high-quality patient care using low-stress handling methods.
  • Demonstrate proficient technical nursing abilities, including venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, diagnostic testing, and radiograph acquisition.
  • Conduct basic examinations and triage as needed.
  • Prepare samples for external laboratory submission and follow up as required.
  • Assist and perform CPCR as necessary.
  • Administer medications, including oral, topical, and injectable forms, with a strong understanding of pharmacology.
  • Participate in daily medical rounds and contribute to Medical, Behavior, Sheltering (MBS) population rounds.
  • Monitor animals for signs of illness or injury and document findings appropriately.
  • Assist with humane euthanasia when required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in medical areas.
  • Perform dental cleanings and radiographs as trained.
  • Transport patients for off-site appointments.
  • Exhibit in-depth knowledge of veterinary medical principles.
  • Ensure safe and low-stress handling of animals during procedures.
  • Support evidence collection and documentation for animal cruelty cases.
  • Monitor post-operative patients for safety and comfort.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or hazards to supervisors.

Collaboration and Administration (35%): Work alongside behavior and sheltering colleagues to provide balanced care for animals and foster a positive team environment.Ensure accurate and timely data entry into medical records.Participate in auditing and monitoring medical records.Handle controlled substances under veterinary supervision in compliance with regulations.Assist with inventory management and supply ordering.Maintain essential equipment and supplies for deployments.Communicate animal status updates effectively.Engage with the behavior team to share relevant information.Explain animal conditions to staff and responders clearly.Commit to continuous improvement in animal care and handling.Adhere to all safety protocols and SOPs.Participate in ongoing education and training.Demonstrate professionalism and teamwork.
Qualifications:

Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with shelter software is advantageous. Candidates must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends, and lift up to 50 lbs. Experience in handling fearful and aggressive animals is essential. A valid veterinary technician license in Ohio is required, with a minimum of one year of clinical experience. Knowledge of shelter medicine principles is preferred. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.

Education and Work Experience:

Applicants must be licensed veterinary technicians in Ohio, with preference given to those with additional state licenses. Experience in animal shelters and with legal cases is highly desirable. Certification in Fear Free practices is a plus.
