Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Chief Radiation Therapist, the Radiation Therapist 2 is responsible for delivering exceptional technical and clinical services in Radiation Therapy. This role encompasses both direct and indirect patient care, support during specialized procedures, and the mentorship of Radiation Therapy students. A strong emphasis is placed on providing outstanding customer service and adhering to the professional behavior standards established by our organization. Staff may be assigned to various Radiation Oncology locations as needed to meet departmental demands.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1. Clinical Duties:
    1.1. The Radiation Therapist employs a comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring confidentiality and dignity throughout the process.
    1.2. Provides safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment tailored to the unique needs of each patient and their family. As an integral member of the treatment team, the Radiation Therapist reinforces the Radiation Oncologist's guidance regarding treatment reactions and care.
    1.3. Adheres to established radiation safety protocols, conducting Time Outs at critical stages of treatment to confirm the accuracy of procedures.
    1.4. Proficiently navigates electronic medical records and departmental systems for patient verification, appointment scheduling, and billing.
    1.5. Participates in the onboarding and training of new staff, offering ongoing education on clinical techniques and departmental policies.
    1.6. Executes all technical responsibilities in accordance with departmental guidelines.
    1.7. Provides necessary technical support for patient care and adjusts schedules as required.
    1.8. Identifies and administers medications as prescribed by licensed practitioners.
    1.9. Availability for emergencies and weekend calls is essential.
    1.10. Reports equipment malfunctions promptly to appropriate personnel.
    1.11. Operates therapeutic equipment following manufacturer standards and departmental policies.
    1.12. Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
    1.13. Performs additional duties as assigned.
    1.14. Resolves complex setups and instructs colleagues and students in this area.
    1.15. Manages urgent cases and coordinates on-call activities with the team.
  • 2. Clinical Expertise:
    2.1. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in diverse clinical scenarios.
    2.2. Maintains continuing education and licensure requirements.
    2.3. Takes initiative for personal development and skill enhancement in collaboration with leadership.
    2.4. Acts as a resource for colleagues, patients, and families.
    2.5. Identifies opportunities for performance improvement and suggests procedural enhancements.
    2.6. Collaborates with the Lead Therapist to ensure efficient departmental operations.
    2.7. Strives for continuous improvement in techniques and practices.
    2.8. Upholds patient safety and regulatory compliance in all activities.
    2.9. Shares responsibility for quality assurance in treatment and documentation.
    2.10. Effectively troubleshoots routine issues encountered during patient care.
  • 3. Educational Role:
    3.1. Engages in the training of Radiation Therapy students, collaborating with the Program Director.
    3.2. Maintains professionalism and respect towards students.
    3.3. Participates in Student Liaison Group Meetings.
    3.4. Oversees students during clinical rotations, providing instruction on techniques.
    3.5. Conducts evaluations of student performance in collaboration with supervisors.
  • 4. Administrative Responsibilities:
    4.1. Collaborates with leadership to develop and implement relevant policies and procedures.
    4.2. Participates in departmental committees as needed.
    4.3. Works with leadership to present new initiatives related to treatment and simulation.
    4.4. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to resolve treatment planning issues.
    4.5. Engages with patients and caregivers to enhance satisfaction and safety.
    4.6. Provides feedback on staff performance for competency assessments.
    4.7. Assists in the recruitment process for new staff.
    4.8. Ensures appropriate staffing levels and provides coverage as necessary.
    4.9. May need to provide direct coverage during weekends and holidays.
    4.10. Supports staff in the absence of leadership and directs matters as needed.
    4.11. Assists in creating schedules for staff coverage.
    4.12. Coordinates daily operations with the team during huddles.

Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from an accredited Radiation Therapy Technology program; A.R.R.T. registration and CT Licensure required.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years in radiation therapy, with 1-3 years in a similar role within the organization.
Licensure: CT Licensure and ARRT Certification required; BLS Certification preferred within three months of hire.
Special Skills: Strong communication and active listening abilities, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety procedures. Ability to connect with patients experiencing physical and emotional challenges.
Physical Demands: The role requires intense focus, manual dexterity, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Staff must be prepared for a physically demanding environment, including lifting and repositioning patients.
