Position: 988 Call Center Counselor

The 988 Crisis Call Center at Community Care Alliance is seeking dedicated professionals eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals within the Rhode Island community. This center serves as a vital crisis response service, addressing calls, chats, and texts from those facing mental health and/or substance use emergencies.

As part of the BH Link network, which includes the state's walk-in behavioral health crisis center, 988 Crisis Counselors play a crucial role in guiding individuals towards in-person support from a skilled clinical team that offers thorough assessments and referral services. The call center also collaborates with local mobile crisis teams, ensuring that clinicians can reach individuals in need directly within their communities. Our services prioritize client-centered care, delivered in the least restrictive environments possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site support at the 988 Call Center.
  • Respond to incoming calls, chats, and texts through the 988 Lifeline and the 414-LINK line.
  • Engage with callers empathetically and professionally to build clinical rapport swiftly.
  • Conduct regular assessments for suicidality and other safety risks among callers in crisis.
  • Identify optimal outcomes, including coordinating wellness checks and dispatching mobile crisis teams as necessary.
  • Offer resource and referral options to callers as needed.
  • Complete all required documentation and data collection promptly.
  • Collaborate directly with BH Link clinical team members as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with emergency services and local authorities when necessary.
  • Document critical incidents and notify supervisors as required.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to handle crisis communications with empathy and poise.
  • Proficiency in multitasking and adapting to varying call/chat/text volumes.
  • Willingness to accept supervision and feedback for continuous improvement as a crisis counselor.
  • Strong communication skills to facilitate effective care coordination.
  • Competence in navigating digital platforms, including answering systems and electronic health records.
  • Multilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in the human services field preferred.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
