Job Overview

The University of Chicago Medicine is seeking a dedicated Patient Transportation Specialist PRN to support our healthcare operations at our medical facility. This role is a 100% onsite position, requiring candidates to be located within the greater Chicagoland area.

As a Patient Transportation Specialist PRN, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of patients, medical records, specimens, and equipment throughout the health center. You will also assist with patient lifts and transfers, adhering to safety protocols.

Position Details:

  • Shift: Day, Evening, or Night
  • Hours per Week: Per Diem

  • Primary Responsibilities: Patient Transportation
  • Employment Status: Non-Union

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to established protocols for the safe transport, lifting, and transferring of patients using appropriate equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers. Collaborate with healthcare staff to ensure patient safety during transfers.
  • Patient Transport Duties:
  • Utilize disposable gloves while performing transportation tasks.
  • Operate standard and bariatric wheelchairs, understanding their specifications and requirements for patient safety.
  • Manage patient transport over potentially long distances within the medical facility.
  • Communication:
  • Maintain timely communication with the Teletracking System to ensure continuous updates with Dispatchers.
  • Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Use personal protective equipment to safeguard both patients and staff from infectious diseases, ensuring hand hygiene before and after patient interactions.
  • Emergency Response:
  • Respond promptly to emergency codes and assist in internal and external disaster situations.
  • Additional Duties:
  • Enter patient schedule changes into the system, monitor requests and wait times, and communicate with management regarding any delays or issues.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information, including daily logs and communication devices.
  • Provide assistance to callers, addressing concerns and coordinating with management as necessary.
  • Perform other assigned tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; prior experience in patient care is preferred. Training will be provided.
  • Physical strength and endurance are required to safely lift and transport patients.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting and transfer techniques is essential.
  • Familiarity with transportation equipment and the ability to navigate the facility is necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and manage data related to patient transport.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures; CPR certification is required.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Basic Life Support
