Overview:
The Patient Care Assistant is responsible for a variety of clinical and environmental tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role requires specialized training and skills that align with the individual's progress through an accredited nursing program. The Patient Care Assistant is currently enrolled in an accredited nursing school and embodies the mission, vision, and ICARE values of Rush, adhering to all policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

1. **Assists the RN in Delivering Patient Care:**
- Reports to the charge Registered Nurse for assignment of duties.
- Ensures a safe environment for patients.
- Prioritizes tasks based on patient and unit needs, under RN guidance.
- Participates in implementing personalized care plans.
- Aids patients with daily living activities.
- Accurately gathers patient data and documents care in the appropriate records.
- Performs routine procedures, treatments, and specimen collections.
- Demonstrates aseptic techniques as required.
- Supports the RN or physician with advanced procedures.
- Manages uncomplicated tubes and drains under RN supervision.
- Executes specific patient care tasks such as blood glucose testing and specimen collection.
- Displays knowledge of age-specific variables and developmental stages.
- Reports any changes in patient condition to the appropriate RN.

2. **Patient Transport and Logistics:**
- Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and transport.
- Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as needed.
- Obtains necessary blood products, supplies, and equipment.

3. **Technology Proficiency:**
- Demonstrates effective use of the telephone and patient call systems.
- Exhibits proficiency in using EPIC.
- Operates unit-specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment competently.

4. **Maintaining a Safe and Organized Environment:**
- Keeps patient rooms safe, organized, and in line with unit routines.
- Independently orders, organizes, and restocks supplies according to unit specifications.
- Replenishes patient room supplies and maintains emergency supplies.

5. **Professional Interaction:**
- Communicates relevant information to team members throughout the shift and to the oncoming shift.
- Coordinates break times and communicates departure and return times per unit protocol.
- Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate or Master's entry-level nursing program with satisfactory grades.
  • Completion of a fundamental nursing course covering basic nursing skills, including vital signs and activities of daily living.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
  • Ability to address simple problems effectively.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk throughout the medical center and remain standing or walking for most of the designated shift.
  • Capability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs and assist in positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
  • Work conditions may involve performing procedures where carelessness could lead to injury or exposure to potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
