Role Summary

The Triage Nurse embodies the core values and mission of Northwestern Memorial, adhering to our ethical standards and compliance protocols. This role is essential in providing expert triage services within a medical practice.

Triage nurses act as crucial intermediaries between patients and healthcare providers, evaluating the severity of patients' symptoms and effectively communicating these assessments to the medical team. They are responsible for educating both patients and staff on clinical matters and must exhibit outstanding customer service and communication abilities, functioning as part of a cohesive team that prioritizes patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Foster positive initial interactions with patients, serving as their advocate.
  • Manage all incoming calls and electronic communications, prioritizing and resolving issues while involving providers as necessary.
  • Document all interactions in the electronic medical record system.
  • Schedule patient appointments based on telephone assessments.
  • Assist patients in securing appointments with specialists.
  • Coordinate emergency transfers and hospital admissions, ensuring all paperwork and communications are handled efficiently.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to nursing standards and provider orders.
  • Provide educational support to patients and staff regarding clinical topics.
  • Oversee the activities of clinical staff to ensure compliance with OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Engage in additional duties as required, which may include:
    • Contributing to process improvement initiatives.
    • Administering intravenous and injectable medications to various patient demographics, ensuring competency in age-related responsibilities.
    • Maintaining quality control throughout all patient care activities, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines.
    • Participating in departmental quality enhancement efforts.
  • For triage nurses in Immediate Care Clinics, flexibility to float to other departments may be required.
  • This position will involve managing care for the abdominal post-transplant patient population.
  • This role does not include direct patient care but focuses on facilitating transitions to local healthcare providers.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited RN program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient environment.
  • Current Registered Nurse License issued by the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Specialty certification.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient setting.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
