The House Supervisor is a critical role within the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, responsible for overseeing the administration of nursing and patient services during assigned tours of duty. This position requires a high level of leadership, expertise, and creative approaches to managing complex client care.
Key Responsibilities- Exercise prerogatives in administrative matters, utilizing appropriate consultation.
- Facilitate the appropriate use of resources on assigned shifts, guiding charge nurses in decision-making and assignment of personnel.
- Coordinate staffing needs house-wide and obtain and ensure the appropriate use of equipment and supplies.
- Assess, guide, and direct decisions that influence how care is provided, including bed control, patient placement, and patient assignments.
- Direct and supervise the nursing care provided to patients with complex nursing care needs throughout the Medical Center.
- Ensure minimally safe staffing levels are provided by securing and assigning competent personnel to each area based on an assessment of patient care needs.
- Investigate, report, and document issues that may have an adverse outcome for patients, staff, family, or hospital.
- Participate in quality monitors and audits and performance improvement activities.
- Observe, evaluate, and document the performance and competency of nursing personnel on off-tours.
- Interpret procedures, standards, and regulations related to patient safety and risk prevention for the department and/or units.
- Assist and involve staff in understanding and implementing patient safety and risk prevention.
- Assist with orienting new staff during non-administrative hours.
- Coach and mentor charge nurses in their role development.
- Serve as a mentor/preceptor to less experienced House Supervisors, students, and staff.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- One year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, or completion of an accredited graduate degree in nursing.
- Critical Care or Emergency Department experience.
This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
