Position Overview

This role is pivotal in delivering clinical and medical support services to patients within the Surgical Services environment. The Surgical Services Specialist II is responsible for:

Ensuring the safe execution of medical procedures that involve incisions or excisions, including interventional pain management and various surgical interventions.

This position plays a crucial role in maintaining a secure atmosphere for patients undergoing surgical procedures.

As a clinical technologist, this role requires specialized expertise acquired through a blend of vocational training, education, and hands-on experience.

This is an experienced-level position that necessitates a foundational understanding of operational protocols and tools, typically gained through prior work experience and vocational education.

Working under moderate supervision, the individual will navigate routine challenges while occasionally needing to interpret or adapt standard procedures, effectively communicating information that may require clarification.


Key Responsibilities

The Surgical Services Specialist II is responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow in the Surgical Services setting. Responsibilities include:

Providing essential support to physicians and registered nurses before, during, and after surgical procedures, adhering to established standards and protocols.

Responding promptly to urgent patient needs by alerting the appropriate medical personnel. Demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of surgical equipment and its applications. Assisting with various diagnostic and screening tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

3. Two years of experience in an operating room setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Associate's degree in a Surgical Technologist program.

2. Three years of experience in same-day surgery, orthopedic procedures, endoscopy, LASIK, or related surgical fields.

3. Relevant specialty certifications.

Essential Duties:

The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned:

1. Assist the Operating Room team with routine clinical tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse during surgical procedures.

2. Prepare procedure rooms daily, adhering to established surgical protocols and physician preferences.

3. Ensure timely turnover of procedure rooms.

4. Prepare surgical instruments and equipment for specific procedures, demonstrating knowledge of aseptic techniques and informing clinical leaders of any equipment issues.

5. Circulate throughout the unit to assist nursing and medical staff as required during pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases.

6. Escort patients to procedure rooms, obtain baseline vital signs, and connect patients to monitoring devices.

7. Under RN supervision, gather pre-procedure data, including height, weight, allergies, NPO status, and contact information for post-procedure follow-up.

8. Assist during procedures as appropriate, taking on responsibilities aligned with the Patient Care Technician role.

9. Demonstrate understanding of patient identifiers and the time-out procedure.

10. Collect, handle, label, and transport specimens according to policy.

11. Clean and disinfect surgical equipment, employing sterilization techniques and maintaining aseptic conditions.

12. Assist nursing staff in transferring patients to the Recovery Room.

13. Communicate supply needs with other departments.

14. Participate in restocking rooms and daily equipment checks.

15. Foster collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues to contribute to team goals and promote a positive work environment.

16. Adapt positively to changes in work schedules.

17. Assist physicians with tasks such as applying casts, assembling materials, and using various medical devices.

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted areas of the Operating Room and other perioperative environments.

2. Capacity to stand under surgical lights for extended periods.

3. Potential for muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, as well as exposure to hazards such as cuts from sharp instruments.

4. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, and varying environmental conditions.

5. Ability to wear protective gear for extended periods.

6. Frequent lifting and positioning of patients and equipment.

7. Regular interaction with patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the Operating Room.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Advanced understanding of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.

2. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure optimal patient care.

3. Familiarity with computers and surgical equipment.

4. Skills necessary to provide care to patients across the lifespan.

5. Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with staff, patients, and other departments.

6. Essential knowledge of procedures related to surgical specialties and the ability to assist in other areas as needed.

7. Awareness of safety protocols concerning electrical equipment.
