Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist II is a skilled Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Surgical Technologist (ST) who operates under the guidance of a registered nurse as part of the surgical team in the Operating Room, ensuring optimal patient care throughout the perioperative process. This role necessitates exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Acts independently as a scrub assistant throughout all phases of surgical procedures.

2. Upholds strict aseptic protocols during setup, patient draping, and surgical interventions.

3. Adheres to Operating Room protocols for the decontamination of instruments, equipment, and room turnover.

4. Exhibits advanced knowledge and expertise while assisting in various procedures within their surgical specialty.

5. Demonstrates proficient knowledge and skills related to procedures outside their specialty, competently supporting multiple service lines and case types within the Operating Room.

6. Serves as a Preceptor for training staff.

7. Maintains current knowledge of equipment to ensure safe and effective use across various surgical specialties.

Departmental Responsibilities

1. Selects instruments and supplies to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.

2. Conducts all counts with the circulating nurse in accordance with Operating Room policy.

3. Manages intraoperative medications following Operating Room guidelines.

4. Assists in emergency situations as required.

5. Handles surgical specimens per physician orders and hospital policy.

6. Fosters a collaborative work environment with peers and colleagues.

7. Aids in the positioning, moving, and transporting of patients as necessary.

8. Reports equipment and supply issues to the Charge Nurse or Clinical Nursing Director as needed.

9. Completes all required continuing education to maintain certification.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills

1. In-depth understanding of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.

2. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure high-quality patient care.

3. Familiarity with computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure.

4. Skills necessary to provide care to patients across the lifespan.

Education and Certification

1. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or military training.

2. Certification required within one year of completing the surgical technologist training program.

3. Current BLS certification.

Experience

1. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is essential.

Working Conditions

1. Ability to function in the semi-restricted and restricted environments of the Operating Room.

2. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, blood, bodily fluids, and varying noise levels.

3. Capacity to remain standing for extended periods.

4. Ability to wear protective lead aprons for prolonged durations.

5. Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients and equipment.
