POSITION SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist II is a skilled Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Surgical Technologist (ST) who operates under the guidance of a registered nurse as part of the surgical team in the Operating Room, providing exceptional patient care throughout the perioperative process. This role requires strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Acts independently as a scrub assistant during all phases of surgical procedures.

2. Upholds stringent aseptic techniques during preparation, patient draping, and throughout surgical operations.

3. Adheres to Operating Room protocols for the effective decontamination of instruments, equipment, and room turnover.

4. Exhibits advanced knowledge and expertise while assisting in various surgical procedures within their specialty.

5. Demonstrates proficient knowledge and skills related to procedures beyond their specialty, effectively supporting multiple service lines and case types in the Operating Room.

6. Serves as a Preceptor for training staff.

7. Maintains current knowledge of equipment to ensure safe and efficient use across various surgical specialties.

8. Selects appropriate instruments, special supplies, and equipment to anticipate the surgical team's needs.

9. Conducts all counts with the circulating nurse in accordance with Operating Room policy.

10. Manages intraoperative medications following Operating Room guidelines.

11. Provides assistance during emergency situations as required.

12. Handles surgical specimens according to physician directives and hospital policies.

13. Fosters a collaborative work environment with peers and colleagues.

14. Aids in the positioning, moving, and transporting of patients as necessary.

15. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead, or Clinical Nursing Director.

16. Completes all necessary continuing education to maintain certification, if applicable.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

1. In-depth understanding of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.

2. Fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure optimal patient care.

3. Basic computer skills and familiarity with surgical equipment and infrastructure.

4. Skills necessary to provide care to patients across all age groups.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent training through a branch of the United States Armed Forces.

2. Certification must be obtained within one year of completing the surgical technologist training program.

3. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is essential.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted areas of the Operating Room and other perioperative support environments.

2. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, blood, bodily fluids, high noise levels, radiation, and temperature fluctuations.

3. Capability to remain standing for extended periods.

4. Ability to wear protective lead aprons for prolonged durations.

5. Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, and surgical instruments.
