Birmingham, Alabama, United States American Forest Foundation Full time
About the Organization:

The American Forest Foundation (AFF) is dedicated to harnessing the potential of family forests as a solution to climate change. Our mission involves assisting numerous landowners in managing their properties while enhancing forest health. Through our Family Forest Carbon Program, we facilitate access to the voluntary carbon market for family forest owners, enabling them to generate high-quality forest carbon credits that support corporate net-zero objectives. Our strategic vision aims to empower family forests to sequester one billion tonnes of carbon by 2050.

Collaboration is at the heart of our work. AFF partners with a diverse coalition of conservation organizations, businesses, and policymakers to provide family forest owners with the financial and technical resources necessary for sustainable forest management practices. Together, we activate forests as vital assets in the global effort against climate change.

Position Overview:

The Forestry Outreach Specialist for the Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) is responsible for cultivating relationships and delivering direct technical support to landowners interested in the program. This role is pivotal in ensuring a positive experience and effective stewardship for landowners engaged in Improved Forest Management (IFM) and Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) practices. The primary focus is to provide exceptional service and management options to landowners, which includes tracking follow-up actions and conducting both remote and in-person visits.

This position primarily serves the state of Alabama, with potential travel to other regions as needed. Candidates ideally should be based in the Birmingham area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a portfolio of landowners, initiating contact, tracking follow-up actions through a Customer Relationship Management system, and maintaining engagement throughout the enrollment process.
  • Conduct remote consultations and field visits, performing forest inventory assessments such as measuring tree diameter, average stand diameter, tree height, and delineating project areas.
  • Utilize forest data to perform calculations with various software tools, including Excel and ArcGIS, to assess woodland eligibility and plan FFCP projects for landowners.
  • Develop comprehensive forest management plans based on project area assessments for landowners participating in the FFCP.
  • Collaborate with the FFCP team and landowners to enhance the landowner experience and identify opportunities for program improvement.
  • Provide timely responses to landowner inquiries regarding enrollment in the Family Forest Carbon Program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Candidate Qualifications:
  • Required: A degree in forestry, natural resource management, wildlife habitat management, ecology, or a related field, along with 1-2 years of experience in forest operations, carbon management, or a comparable combination of education and experience. Preferred: SAF accreditation or eligibility for the MI Registered Forester Program.
  • Experience working directly with forest landowners, demonstrating successful outcomes.
  • Knowledge of forest dendrology and mensuration techniques.
  • Experience in developing forest management plans for timber and wildlife objectives, as well as familiarity with forest certification processes.
  • Understanding of sustainability, climate science, natural climate solutions, and carbon sequestration.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and GIS applications.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, able to engage with diverse stakeholders including colleagues, community leaders, and the public.
  • Exhibit a customer service-oriented mindset and excellent organizational abilities.
  • Demonstrate effective time management skills, capable of prioritizing and managing multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
Core Competencies:
  • Agility: Ability to adapt swiftly in dynamic and uncertain environments.
  • Collaboration: Working cooperatively with others to achieve common goals.
  • Accountability: Upholding high standards of responsibility and transparency.
  • Problem Solving: Identifying challenges and developing effective solutions.
What We Offer:
