Position Summary

The Excavation Superintendent is responsible for overseeing job site management and coordination of Heavy Civil construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Support and promote the Safety program.
  • Assist the Division Vice President and other team members as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Equipment Manager to ensure all assigned machinery is operational, safe, and maintained daily.
  • Maintain compliance with Blue Stakes and ensure project coverage.
  • Document daily activities and generate job reports.
  • Coordinate various Heavy Civil construction tasks, including Earthwork, Underground Utilities, and Site Preparation.
  • Develop daily, weekly, and three-week construction activity plans.
  • Direct field personnel according to the established daily agenda.
  • Ensure timely ordering and availability of necessary materials and resources.
  • Interpret and comprehend Plans, Specifications, and Soils Reports.
  • Review and understand the job book.
  • Verify accuracy of Labor and Equipment hours and ensure proper coding.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager on job activities and schedule reviews.
  • Manage subcontractor activities as required.
  • Analyze cost versus budget and overall construction productivity.
  • Foster relationships for repeat business and develop field contacts.
  • Engage in client meetings and discussions with authorities and owners.
  • Prepare job schedules for upcoming meetings.
  • Maintain organized job files, including correspondence and photographs.
  • Keep current drawings accessible on-site.
  • Coordinate with the Project Manager regarding additional work.
  • Address issues for the Division Vice President, Project Manager, and team.
Supervisory Responsibilities

The Superintendent will oversee job-assigned operators and laborers, working closely with Building Superintendents, Field Foremen, Field Crews, and Subcontractors.

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

Education and Experience

A minimum of 5 years of relevant construction experience.

Technical Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret plans.
  • Proficient in equipment operation.
  • Skilled in setting, transferring, and understanding grades.
  • Experience in managing and directing field personnel.
  • Capability to operate standard field equipment and instruments.
  • Familiarity with GPS-controlled equipment.
Behavioral Skills
  • Commitment to safety practices.
  • Team-oriented and flexible work ethic.
  • Strong organizational and communication abilities.
  • Confidence in directing production work with a positive demeanor.
  • Integrity in handling confidential company information.
Language Proficiency

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, contracts, specifications, or governmental regulations. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from managers, clients, investors, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts, applying concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and surveying.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting various instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Special Requirements

Must successfully pass controlled substance tests prior to and throughout employment.
