The Role

The Chief Risk Management Officer is responsible for leading corporate strategic risk and compliance oversight. This senior management position involves identifying, assessing, measuring, monitoring, mitigating, and managing all risk arising from the internal and external business environment at a bank-wide level. The CRO provides the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, and senior management with effective advice on risk strategies and their implementation, manages the ERM functions, including risk assessments, compliance, vendor management. The CRO also works closely with the BSA Officer to ensure consistent enforcement of the bank's overall risk policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enterprise Risk Management Framework: Accountable for the execution and continued enhancement of the Bank's enterprise risk management framework, including its risk appetite statement, and related processes to achieve its short-term and long-term strategic, financial, and operational goals.
  • Risk-Based Strategies: Develops a deep understanding of, and assists in informing, the Bank's business strategies and related policies, processes, and controls based upon its established risk appetite.
  • Risk Liaison: Helps further the Bank's culture of risk serving as the primary risk liaison with its Board of Directors via the Risk Committee and with the Bank's executive management.
  • Committee Participation: Participates in various other management-level committees to provide risk-based perspectives and input.
  • Risk Management Infrastructure: Develops and enhances risk management-related infrastructure, including policies, processes, procedures, and documentation to continue supporting the Bank's growth and decision-making.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Serves as a liaison with regulators in connection with risk management-related exams. Assists in responding to, and implementing, exam recommendations and findings.
  • Bank-Wide Risk Assessment: Oversees the Bank-wide risk assessment to identify and measure current and forward-looking enterprise risks.
  • Compliance and Risk: Assumes ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the company conducts its business risk and compliance with applicable FDIC and NYDFS laws.
  • Industry Trends: Monitors external environment and industry trends and practices and makes recommendations to the Bank's executive management, as appropriate.
  • Emerging Risks: Leads the identification of, and planning for, emerging risks.
  • Partnerships and Collaboration: Develops strong partnerships with leaders of various functional areas of responsibility within the Bank to provide effective and creditable challenge in assessing risk and to provide trusted practical advice and assistance in helping to support the Bank's business objectives.
  • BSA Officer Collaboration: Collaborates closely with the BSA Officer in ensuring consistent application of bank's risk framework.
  • Strategic Planning: Supports the Chief Executive Officer in the development analysis and interpretation of legal, risk, compliance, BSA and vendor management information for strategic planning.
  • ERM Committee: Chairs the Enterprise Risk Management Committee.
Qualifications
  • Education: BA/BS degree in Risk Management, Finance or Business.
  • Experience: 15 years of financial institution management experience, focused in risk management, credit, legal, compliance and/or internal audit, with increasing responsibilities for multi-faceted direction and planning.
  • Management Experience: Minimum ten years management experience.
  • Partnership Experience: Experience partnering with executive management.
  • Financial Institution Experience: Experience developing and/or overseeing risk management for financial institutions with assets size exceeding $500MM preferred.
  • JD Designation: JD designation and significant experience in a consumer and commercial financial services environment are strongly preferred.
  • Financial Services Operations: Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial services operations.
  • Managerial Experience: Minimum of 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience.
  • Commercial Banking Experience: Previous experience in commercial banking loan operations with increasing level of supervisory/manager responsibility.
  • Familiarity with Fiserv: Familiarity with Fiserv.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Strong knowledge of all loan operations functions.
  • High-Volume Servicing: Experience in high-volume servicing area.
  • Transaction Calculation: Strong analytical skills especially related to transaction calculation and account reconciliation.
  • Detail-Oriented: Detail-oriented & ability to effectively multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Time Management: Strong time management skills: ability to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress toward goals, and track activities.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to challenge the status quo & open to change, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to influence others.
Compensation

The hiring range for this position is $250,000 to $325,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors. A bonus and/or incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, dental, vision, 401k, and other benefits.
