Position Summary: The Shelter Transit Operator is responsible for safely transporting families to and from the shelter. This role involves assisting families with various transportation needs and coordinating logistics with the shelter team. When not engaged in driving duties, the operator will support the overall operations of the shelter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport families to and from designated locations using the shelter's passenger transport vehicle.
  • Prepare and plan driving routes to ensure the most efficient travel.
  • Adhere to the shelter's policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular communication with shelter leadership and staff regarding transportation matters.
  • Utilize a shelter mobile phone during transport to coordinate trip logistics.
  • Report any issues with the transport vehicle promptly.
  • Notify families of any delays in pick-up or drop-off times.
  • Assist families in entering and exiting the transport vehicle as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including the use of car seats and seat belts.
  • Document each trip, including mileage and destinations.
  • Comply with state and national road regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper maintenance of the transport vehicle.
  • Ensure the vehicle has adequate fuel for trips and refill as necessary.
  • Complete necessary documentation such as logs and participant reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager and Director of Shelter Operations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Clean Driving Record.
  • Previous driving experience preferred.
  • Training in CPR and First Aid will be provided.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and understanding of the needs of homeless families.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to set limits in a supportive manner.
  • Ability to think creatively and respond to crises effectively.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Willingness to work with a diverse population.
