POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinic-Based Recovery Doula (RD) is responsible for offering comprehensive support services to families anticipating the arrival of their newborns. This role connects families with essential post-birth resources within their communities. Recovery Doulas are skilled professionals who deliver ongoing emotional, physical, and informational assistance to parents throughout the childbirth process. By integrating personal experiences with substance use, mental health, or chronic illness, along with Peer Support training, Recovery Doulas provide vital support to expectant families. An effective doula nurtures, advocates, and guides parents, ensuring they receive informed advice while respecting their choices for an optimal birthing experience. Clinical oversight is provided by a licensed Behavioral Health Provider.

COMPENSATION: $18.31-$18.90 (Non-certified), $21.92-$23.84 (Certified)

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time to Full-time hours

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certificates/Licenses:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Lactation Counselor Certification (to be obtained within the first year of employment)
  • Certified Facilitator for Fatherhood/Motherhood is Sacred and/or Circle of Security (to be obtained within the first 6 months)
  • BLS Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support (PS 101 may be completed within the first 30 days of employment for SUD/Mental Health peer supporters only)
  • WRAP training
  • Motivational or Solutions-Based Interviewing
  • Trauma-informed care training

Experience:

Required:

  • Lived experience with substance use and/or mental health challenges, with a minimum of two (2) years of successful recovery
  • Community outreach and education experience
  • Passion for supporting birthing families
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office

Preferred:

  • Five (5) years' experience in community organizing, youth work, ministry, education, or public health
  • State Certification as a Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist
  • Certification as a Birth/Post-Partum Doula

Specialist Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures the smooth operation of the organization and/or department by managing tasks and information effectively.

Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains stable recovery and necessary care/treatment for behavioral health challenges, publicly identifying as being in recovery from a mental health, substance use, or addiction diagnosis.
  2. Follows an individual mom/family enrolled in Sacred Families through the birthing process and beyond, providing emotional, physical, and informational support.
  3. Completes a Family Plan of Safe Care with each family and engages with Child Protective Services (CPS) if a current case is open, fostering a proactive relationship.
  4. Conducts basic screenings for resource needs and refers families to the appropriate One Health community worker for assessment and service referrals.
  5. Provides regular peer support related to Substance Use Disorder (SUD), mental health, or chronic illness needs, intensifying support as the birth approaches.
  6. Monitors patient charts for required Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) once per trimester and once postpartum, referring patients to providers if gaps are identified.
  7. Participates in healthcare and behavioral healthcare huddles to stay informed of each client's treatment plan.
  8. Encourages families to attend regular appointments for adequate prenatal care and engage in beneficial activities like groups and recovery community events.
  9. Supports families during labor and birth, remaining for 1-2 hours post-birth to collect data regarding the birth, infant, and mother.
  10. Continues to provide intensive support at home for two weeks postpartum, assisting with post-partum education and support, transitioning back to peer support thereafter.
  11. Facilitates Centering Pregnancy cohorts and delivers birth education using the Sacred Families curriculum for every pregnant family at One Health.
  12. Conducts Motherhood/Fatherhood is Sacred and/or Circle of Security parenting classes.
  13. Provides lactation counseling as needed for all enrolled families.
  14. Tracks and compiles data for grant-related quality assurance/quality improvement projects and all required funding reports.
