Sunnyvale, California, United States Amazon Full time

About the Role
The Amazon Devices team is at the forefront of designing cutting-edge consumer electronics, including the renowned Amazon Echo, FireTV, Fire Tablets, Kindle, and Astro product lines.

We are seeking a dedicated individual contributor with a robust background in video processing and picture quality algorithm development, along with experience in implementing these algorithms in silicon.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Picture Quality (PQ) Architect, you will:

  • Define the picture quality standards for display-centric consumer products such as TVs, Echo Show, and streaming media players, as well as innovative concepts yet to be unveiled.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison for product management and business teams, interpreting and clarifying the desired user experience and requirements related to picture quality.
  • Establish the picture quality benchmarks for each product and collaborate closely with the PQ tuning team to deliver distinctive and innovative picture quality.
  • Conduct thorough analyses of both internal and external solutions concerning specific PQ features and propose development plans for PQ algorithms to enhance existing or new features.
  • Drive critical design decisions regarding the optimal combination of PQ features to support various use cases for specific products, documenting proposals and decisions in a PQ architecture specification.
  • Monitor market trends and standards in multimedia pipelines, video processing, and display processing, interfacing directly with silicon and IP vendors to define organizational roadmaps for next-generation video picture quality IPs and standards.
  • Serve as a key contact for senior leadership in this technology domain, regularly presenting roadmap updates to executives.
  • Engage deeply with video pipelines and interfaces, defining specifications for next-gen silicon platforms and collaborating with silicon vendors for implementation.
  • Remain involved throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial concept through prototype development, validation, and production, ensuring that product requirements are met.
  • Work closely with diverse teams, including Program Managers, Software Developers, Silicon and IP architects, and ML Scientists.

A Day in the Life
Your daily activities will include:

  • Gathering business and functional product requirements on Picture Quality from internal and external customers, translating these into technical specifications.
  • Conducting Picture Quality analyses through proof of concepts on existing or new platforms.
  • Defining and developing PQ algorithms that enhance and differentiate Amazon's product offerings.
  • Presenting architectural trade-offs and recommendations to senior management.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and implement PQ algorithms.
  • Driving technology roadmaps in video and display SoC technologies to foster innovation aligned with long-term product strategies.
  • Providing design and validation reviews for engineering teams, offering feedback on architecture, design issues, integration, performance, and scalability.
  • Working closely with silicon and IP suppliers to influence their roadmaps to meet Amazon Lab126's needs.

About the Team
The system architecture team is responsible for architecting Amazon Lab126 products, including Echo, Fire Tablets, FireTV, Kindle eReaders, Hearables, Wearables, and IoT devices. The team manages chipset and IP technology roadmaps, driving strategies that enable reuse and scalability across Amazon devices. We are always seeking capable architects who can elevate our technical expertise and contribute to the architecture of next-gen devices and emerging concepts.

Basic Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of industry experience in video/display processing, PQ processing, and customization, with proven documentation (papers and U.S. patents).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to document and present technical designs clearly.
  • Experience with video codecs, video algorithm development, display pipelines, and/or multimedia IPs and architectures.
  • Proficiency in algorithm development and programming in MATLAB, C, C++, and Python.

Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:

  • Expertise in defining the optimal combination of TV PQ features for various use cases.
  • 8+ years of experience developing TV processing algorithms, including practical experience with HDR10/10+/HLG video processing.
  • Experience using objective methods for picture quality assessment.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-based approaches to TV processing and compression.
  • Experience architecting multimedia systems with display, graphics, and video codec features.
  • Knowledge of heterogeneous SoC architectures.
