Job Summary

This position oversees the supervision and training of Shelter Technicians, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. Responsibilities include maintaining schedule coverage and providing comprehensive animal care, such as handling, coordinating, and monitoring health and temperament. The role requires a hands-on approach to meet the animals' needs and prepare them for adoption. Additionally, it ensures a humane and healthy environment for both animals and visitors at the Athens Animal Shelter.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision and Training: Supervise Shelter Technicians, Train Shelter Technicians on policies and procedures, Scheduling and Coverage: Ensure scheduling coverage
  • Animal Care: Care for, feed, monitor, medicate, and perform minor treatment on animals, Report observed health or behavior issues to Directors and adoption specialists, Inventory and Supplies: Inventory and order supplies, Keep current inventory of necessary supplies and report shortages to Directors and adoption specialists
  • Shelter Maintenance: Maintain animal shelter by cleaning animal cages, kennels, other animal areas, and floors, Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to Directors and adoption specialists
  • Adoption Support: Aid prospective clients in the selection of animals for adoption and in the preparation of adoption forms, Inform new owners of pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies, and procedures
  • Administrative and Customer Service: Provide administrative and customer service support for the Athens Animal Shelter, Monitor the front desk, answer inquiries by phone or in person, perform data entry, and maintain accurate records, Maintain database for the Athens Animal Shelter by entering accurate information for adopters and adoptable animals, Process animal transfers, animal redemptions, and animal intake services and records
  • Public Relations and Education: Provide information to the public about Athens Animal Shelter programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership, Provide humane education to customers, Represent the Athens Animal Shelter by providing excellent customer service and focus
  • Additional Responsibilities: Additional tasks assigned by the Animal Shelter Manager
Requirements
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of City Policies and Procedures: Comprehensive understanding of the City of Athens policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and alignment with municipal regulations
  • Shelter Policies and Protocols: In-depth knowledge of Athens Animal Shelters policies and protocols, including but not limited to, admission processes, cleaning standards, and medical procedures
  • Animal Care Expertise: Proficient in identifying various breeds, recognizing diseases and medical conditions, and understanding animal handling and behavior to ensure the well-being of the animals
  • Safe Animal Handling: Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness, minimizing stress and ensuring humane treatment
  • Professional Representation: Capability to represent the City of Athens Animal Shelter professionally in all interactions with the public, volunteers, and staff, maintaining a positive image
  • Team Collaboration: Strong ability to create and maintain positive working relationships within the shelter and with Animal Control, volunteers, and the public, fostering a collaborative team environment
  • Stress Management: Must be patient, courteous, and able to work effectively under stressful conditions, maintaining composure and professionalism
  • Detail-Oriented Work: Knowledge and ability to work accurately with detailed information in both paper and computerized formats, ensuring precision in all tasks
  • Time Management: Must be detail-oriented with strong time management skills, capable of prioritizing tasks and managing time efficiently
  • Effective Communication: Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively, ensuring clear and concise information exchange
  • Adaptability: Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes in programs and procedures, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to embrace new methods
