Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Assistant to join our team at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting our surgeons and veterinary students in the operating room. Your primary responsibilities will include positioning and aseptically prepping patients, opening sterilized equipment and instruments, and operating specialized surgical equipment. You will also be responsible for instructing senior veterinary and technician students in gowning and gloving, proper hand scrubbing, and basic Operating Room etiquette. Additionally, you will perform cleaning and stocking duties, check expiration dates on supplies, and assist with emergency on-call shifts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a circulating Nurse to support the surgeons by positioning and aseptically prepping patients, open sterilized equipment and instruments, operate specialized surgical equipment, properly clean and maintain the surgery suites before, during, and after procedures.
  • Instruct the senior veterinary and technician students in gowning and gloving, proper hand scrubbing and basic Operating Room etiquette, as well as orienting them for emergency duty.
  • Perform cleaning and stocking duties, check expiration dates on supplies, and assist with emergency on-call shifts.
Requirements
  • Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
  • Hands-on experience within an animal hospital setting that required donning surgical scrubs, face covering, and associated PPE to assist with surgery procedures within an operating room.
