Veterinary Assistant-PHC

The University of Georgia is seeking a skilled Veterinary Assistant-PHC to join our team at the Pet Health Center. As a key member of our animal care team, you will provide exceptional care and support to our patients and their owners.
Key Responsibilities- Assist Registered Veterinary Technicians in nursing care to help manage all aspects of the patient's treatment.
- Perform day-to-day Veterinary Assistant duties in the PHC, including dental procedures, otic lavage, wound clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casts, sedation, suturing, catheterization, venipuncture, injections, medication administration, CPR, and airway and circulatory system management.
- Train senior veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and new nursing staff in the PHC.
- Assist and instruct new employees, senior veterinary students, and veterinary technician students with various duties performed in the Pet Health Center, including receiving patients, examinations, dentistry, dental radiology, obtaining specimens, and testing.
- Stock supplies of cleaning products and patient care equipment and ensure facility cleanliness using a mop, broom, chemical cleaning supplies to sanitize cages/kennels and sterilize instruments using an autoclave.
- Enter lab work into the lab computer system and check results.
- Pull up client records in the VetView system and enter procedure and consultation fees.
- Obtain specimen samples and perform diagnostic procedures, including glucose monitoring, skin scraping, biopsies, allergy testing, fungal interpretations, cystocentesis, endoscopy, electrocardiology, echocardiography, biopsies, cytology preps, and other procedures as needed.
- Assist in surgical procedures and scrub in as needed.
- Monitor patients while under anesthesia for procedures demanded of the particular service.
- Technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
- Experience in handling animals in a patient care setting is preferred.
This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, stand, crouch, kneel, or lift heavy patients, work with medical equipment and isolation tools, and use cleaning solutions.
