Field Service Technician Overview

A Field Service Technician plays a crucial role in the initiation, commissioning, integration, and urgent repair of electrical switchgear systems, including Power Distribution Units (PDU), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Power Distribution Centers (PDC), circuit breakers, protective relays, programmable logic controllers (PLC), meters, and various automated devices. This position also involves mechanical repairs and modifications under the guidance of senior technicians. The technician is expected to foster and maintain strong relationships with customers, colleagues, sales representatives, and other stakeholders while ensuring effective communication with the Customer Response Center (CRC), supervisors, and direct management.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in electronics or field services is preferred.
  • Educational background in electrical theory and technologies, with relevant job experience.
  • Proficiency in using electrical and electronic testing equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and blueprints related to power control and automation.
  • Knowledge of power distribution, AC/DC systems, voltage circuit theory, and practical troubleshooting techniques.
  • Experience with electrical power systems, particularly low to medium voltage switchgear testing, is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with programming PLCs and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) is a plus.
  • Mechanical skills and aptitude are essential.
  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Competence in standard computer applications, including MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Physical capability to lift at least 50 pounds regularly.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • Commitment to a customer-first approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the initiation, commissioning, integration, and troubleshooting of switchgear systems.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with customers, colleagues, and sales representatives.
  • Assess the operational status of equipment.
  • Engage effectively with customers at all levels.
  • Manage personal schedules efficiently.
  • Conduct general and preventive maintenance on switchgear systems.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service requests from customers.
  • Provide timely and accurate communication to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of time cards, expense reports, and other documentation.

Work Environment

  • This role requires travel, with assignments typically lasting between 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Work schedules usually involve 10-12 hour shifts, 5-6 days a week, which may include day or night shifts.
  • This is a hands-on position with significant travel, potentially up to 80% of the time.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, is expected.
