The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a full-time Behavior Specialist to become a vital member of our Behavior Team. This role will be based at our advanced facilities.


Department: Behavior

Employment Status: Nonexempt/Hourly

Work Schedule: Days/Weekends

Reports To: Behavior Manager

Daily Responsibilities:

As a Behavior Specialist, you will support the operations of the Behavior team, embodying our core values of innovation, compassion, and excellence. Your role will involve delivering outstanding service to both internal and external stakeholders while conducting behavior assessments, providing objective insights, and making informed decisions regarding animal disposition. You will engage with pet owners, adopters, staff, and volunteers to discuss animal behavior and adoption suitability. Additionally, you will collaborate with medical personnel to facilitate treatment and manage the flow of animals within the behavior department, ensuring a healthy environment for all animals.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a shelter environment or certification in animal training or behavior.
  • Proficient understanding of Operant and Classical Conditioning principles.
  • Able to interpret canine and feline body language.
  • Advocate for positive reinforcement and force-free training methods.
  • Open to learning, receptive to feedback, and adaptable to change.
  • Ability to maintain focus and productivity in a dynamic setting.
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on customer service.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

This role necessitates continuous standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, and bending, with limited opportunities for sitting. The individual must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. The position involves repetitive hand, wrist, and elbow motions, as well as good vision and hearing capabilities. Effective communication with colleagues and the public is essential, especially in a noisy environment with various animal sounds. The role involves significant interaction with a high volume of animals and collaboration across departments.
