Position: Animal Behavior Specialist


The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a passionate full-time Behavior Specialist to become a vital member of our Behavior Team. This role will be based at our advanced facilities.


Department: Behavior

Employment Status: Nonexempt/Hourly

Work Schedule: Days/Weekends

Reports To: Behavior Manager

Supervises: N/A

Key Responsibilities:

As a Behavior Specialist, you will support the operations of the Behavior team, embodying our core values of innovation, compassion, and excellence. Your role will involve providing outstanding customer service while conducting behavior assessments, offering objective insights, and making informed decisions regarding animal behavior. You will engage with pet owners, adopters, staff, and volunteers to discuss behavioral issues and the suitability of pets for adoption. Additionally, you will collaborate with medical personnel to facilitate treatment and manage the flow of animals within the behavior department.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience in a shelter environment or relevant certification in animal training or behavior.
  • Proficient understanding of Operant and Classical Conditioning principles.
  • Ability to interpret canine and feline body language.
  • Commitment to positive reinforcement and force-free training methods.
  • Open to learning, receptive to feedback, and adaptable.
  • Ability to maintain focus and productivity in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on customer service.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

This role requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, and kneeling, along with the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. The position involves repetitive motions and demands good vision and hearing. You will be in close contact with a high volume of animals and may encounter various environmental conditions, including noise and animal odors.
