Position Overview

Legal Aid Bureau is dedicated to providing transformative civil legal support to eligible individuals across the region. The Statewide Advocacy Support Unit is excited to announce an opening for a full-time attorney within our Victim's Assistance Project (VAP). This specialized team consists of three attorneys, two paralegals, and a supervising attorney, all committed to delivering comprehensive legal services and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. We are seeking candidates with 1 to 3 years of relevant experience to represent clients in protective order and family law cases, as well as housing and consumer law matters related to their victimization. A strong commitment to social justice and experience working with survivors is essential.

The selected attorney will primarily operate from our office while providing legal assistance to clients in various jurisdictions. Responsibilities will include trial litigation, appellate work, community outreach, policy advocacy, and professional training initiatives. The attorney will report directly to the Supervising Attorney for this project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vigorously represent clients in court regarding protective orders, divorce, and custody matters, while advocating for clients involved in the criminal justice system as victim-witnesses.
  • Conduct thorough client interviews and offer clear legal guidance.
  • Formulate case strategies for trial representation through diligent legal research and factual investigation.
  • Prepare legal documents, including complaints, answers, counter-complaints, memoranda of law, and briefs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community anti-violence organizations and participate in local speaking engagements.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through training opportunities provided by the Legal Aid Bureau.
  • Maintain accurate case records using the LegalServer case management system.
  • Perform additional duties as required within the scope of the position.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • One to three years of legal experience, including clerkships or fellowships.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and leadership skills, with a collaborative approach to client service.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to travel locally and regionally as needed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and serving underrepresented communities.
  • Prior experience working with survivors of abuse is preferred.

Work Environment

Staff attorneys have the flexibility to work remotely at least two days per week, depending on court schedules and case requirements. When not working remotely, attorneys will operate from the office or in court settings.

Compensation and Benefits

Staff attorneys will receive a competitive salary aligned with the Legal Aid Bureau's current pay scale, which is subject to annual review. Additionally, a comprehensive benefits package is offered, including health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off, sick leave, and numerous paid holidays.
