Position Overview

The Capital Area Division (CAD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is looking for a Weapon Development System Engineer to deliver technical and program management assistance to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in the development of Counter-WMD weapons and capabilities. The selected candidate will engage in various systems engineering and technical program management activities supporting DTRA's CWMD Weapons and Capabilities Division across a wide array of programs and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Technology Concept Development

  • Collaborate with U.S. Warfighters, stakeholders, and capability development partners to define and document capability requirements.
  • Conduct threat assessments to guide capability concept formulation.
  • Perform market analyses on weapons and capabilities.
  • Generate, assess, and select material solution concepts.
  • Execute and document SWaP analysis and trade-space evaluations for chosen concepts.

Program Planning and Execution Support

  • Draft comprehensive technology program plans.
  • Establish and document performance metrics for systems and subsystems.
  • Create work breakdown structures (WBS).
  • Conduct risk assessments for technology programs and formulate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Engage in program technology and quality reviews/assessments.

Test Planning and Execution Support

  • Coordinate test planning with program teams and testing entities.
  • Develop test plans, recommend methodologies, and identify suitable testbeds.
  • Provide support during test execution, including personnel accountability and documentation.
  • Review data acquisition plans and data analysis from performers.

General Responsibilities

  • Compose white papers and reports.
  • Produce high-quality, independent work using Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project, etc.).
  • Present program support activities and status updates to program managers, teams, and senior leadership.
  • This position is hybrid eligible, requiring in-person support to DTRA within one hour of notification during standard business hours, while also allowing for off-site work opportunities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related hard science.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Weapons Development and/or Testing, Systems Engineering, Technical Program Management/Support, DoD System Acquisition, and Program Management.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Possess a current/active SECRET clearance with the capability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in engineering or a related hard science.
  • Experience with explosive-related phenomena, including blast overpressure, fragmentation, thermal effects, non-kinetic lethality mechanisms, and WMD materials and their effects.
  • Familiarity with various DoD weaponeering lethality tools and high-fidelity modeling and simulation software.
