Position Summary

The Environmental Resource Management Specialist plays a crucial role in providing technical assistance for the stewardship and oversight of lands acquired through the Hillsborough County Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess at least one year of experience in land stewardship or landscaping, with a focus on managing invasive plant species through chemical treatments. Experience in participating in controlled burns as a crew member, along with proficiency in operating agricultural machinery and power tools, is essential. Familiarity with software applications such as Word, Outlook, Solocator, Avenza Maps, and Teams is expected. Knowledge of Google Earth, GIS, and GPS systems, as well as the ability to interpret aerial imagery, will be advantageous. A general understanding of native plant and animal species, as well as invasive species identification, is also preferred. Additionally, candidates should hold a State of Florida Restricted Pesticide License in the Natural Areas and/or Aquatic Category and have completed the S130/S190 Basic Wildland Fire training course.

Compensation

Minimum: $15.65 | Midpoint: $21.83 | Maximum: $28.01

Responsibilities

The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on the assigned responsibilities, the incumbent may perform one or more of the activities described below:

  • Maintain existing and future access points, trails, and park facilities within the Environmental Lands Program.
  • Implement control measures for invasive plant species using herbicides and alternative methods.
  • Assist in the removal of invasive and nuisance animal species.
  • Support prescribed burn operations by preparing fire lanes and participating in burn activities.
  • Conduct guided educational tours of various nature preserves.
  • Participate in water quality monitoring initiatives.
  • Engage in restoration efforts, including the planting of native vegetation.
  • Ensure the upkeep of signage, restroom facilities, and parking areas at different preserves.

Physical Demands

  • Requires consistent physical labor.
  • Must be able to work in challenging weather conditions typical of a subtropical climate.
  • Involves exposure to flames and smoke during prescribed burns.

Work Category

  • Heavy Work - Involves exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; AND
  • Two years of relevant field experience in Ecology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management.
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary job-related competencies; AND
  • Must maintain a valid Florida Driver's License; AND
  • Must obtain a valid Restricted Use Pesticide License-Natural Areas Category within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment; AND
  • Must complete basic firefighting training courses (S130, S190, L180) within six months of employment.

Emergency Management Duties

In the event of an emergency, employees may be required to fulfill duties as assigned by their department or the County's Office of Emergency Management.
