POSITION: BILINGUAL IMMIGRATION LEGAL ASSISTANT (Hybrid Role)

AGENCY OVERVIEW: The Asian Law Alliance (ALA) is a dedicated non-profit legal organization that has been offering legal assistance, community education, and advocacy since 1977, focusing on the needs of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Santa Clara County. Our priority areas include immigration and citizenship, housing, domestic violence, public benefits, and civil rights.

ROLE SUMMARY: The Bilingual Immigration Legal Assistant will collaborate closely with our team of immigration attorneys. This hybrid role will commence with a probationary period to assess mutual fit. The assistant will be expected to work in-person 2-3 days a week at the ALA office for team meetings, client consultations, and case preparation. Responsibilities will include providing administrative and legal support on intricate cases, primarily focusing on removal defense and asylum applications. Additional case types may include naturalization, DACA, adjustment of status, and work permits. Key duties will encompass:

  • Conducting initial client intakes and follow-up consultations
  • Offering interpretation and document translation during client meetings, case preparation, immigration interviews, and court proceedings
  • Preparing and submitting immigration forms while analyzing and organizing supporting documentation
  • Performing legal and non-legal research to support complex immigration issues
  • Updating and maintaining client and case information in the online case management system

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and either Spanish, Vietnamese, or Mandarin is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the needs of low-income immigrant communities
  • Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is necessary
  • Attention to detail and the ability to perform under pressure are crucial
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • A valid California driver's license and personal vehicle are required for local candidates
  • Full vaccination with an FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccine is required prior to the start of employment.

COMPENSATION: Salary range is $66,560 to $76,000, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision plans; sick leave; paid vacation; a 403(b) retirement plan; and a flexible spending account.
