The Immigration Legal Support Specialist plays a crucial role in helping newcomers navigate the complexities of immigration legal processes and achieve economic self-sufficiency.
The Immigration Legal Support Specialist will coordinate and provide direct assistance to low-income clients seeking immigration legal benefits. Under the guidance of an attorney or DOJ Representative, responsibilities may include:
- Scheduling client appointments.
- Completing necessary forms and collecting supporting documentation for submission to relevant authorities.
- Preparing motions and forms for filing with immigration review offices.
- Drafting written declarations to support immigration applications.
- Following up with clients post-workshops.
- Responding to client inquiries via phone and in person.
This position serves clients across various regions and is integral to the success of our immigration support services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide a range of legal services to clients under the supervision of a Supervising Attorney or DOJ Representative.
- Prepare checklists and supportive materials for clients to facilitate legal service delivery.
- Complete immigration forms for submission to relevant agencies and compile application packages for attorney review.
- Engage with clients to guide them through the legal process, including document translation and collection.
- Maintain accurate records and data entry in legal service software.
- For those on the Removal Defense Team: Conduct research for asylum or cancellation cases and prepare detailed declarations for immigration court.
- For those on the Affirmative Team: Draft declarations for waiver applications and liaise with consulates for consular processing.
- For those on the SIJS Team: Research local rules for guardianship petitions and prepare necessary declarations.
- Submit petitions or applications to appropriate agencies and maintain organized client files.
- Compile reports and provide referrals to clients for additional services.
- Participate in community events and mandatory staff meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
To excel in this role, candidates should possess:
- A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Direct experience in providing legal immigration services and a solid understanding of immigration law.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
- Cultural sensitivity and excellent translation skills.
- Strong writing and communication abilities.
- Capability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
- Familiarity with immigration or case management software.
- Proactive approach to project management and client needs.
- Interest in pursuing accreditation with the Board of Immigration Appeals is a plus.
