San Francisco, California, United States Immigration Center for Women and Children Full time

The Immigration Center for Women and Children (ICWC) is seeking a full-time Lead Immigration Attorney for our Mid-Market Office. Salary range is $84,000 to $98,000, commensurate with experience in supervisory roles and immigration law.

About ICWC: ICWC is a non-profit legal organization dedicated to providing free or affordable immigration services to underrepresented women and children in California and Nevada. Established in 2004, ICWC has become a national authority in humanitarian-based immigration cases, assisting survivors of trauma and serving over 70,000 individuals. Our mission is to ensure security and stability for children who have faced abuse, abandonment, or neglect, as well as for immigrants who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. Our offices primarily focus on federal immigration laws that enable marginalized immigrants to apply for work authorization and permanent residency. We are committed to a client-centered approach, demonstrating compassion for immigrants and their families, and empowering survivors to heal from trauma. We foster a supportive workplace where self-care is prioritized.

Key Responsibilities:

The Lead Immigration Attorney will oversee staff attorneys, DOJ representatives, and legal assistants, while collaborating with other legal professionals, social workers, and interns. This role involves representing survivors of crime, including domestic violence victims and unaccompanied immigrant minors who have escaped abuse in their home countries and are currently in or have been released from federal custody. The attorney may occasionally visit facilities to conduct intake interviews with eligible youth. Coordination with the ICWC ORR team members in the office and collaboration with management across all ICWC locations will be essential.

Responsibilities include conducting client intakes, assessing cases, managing ongoing legal matters, researching, drafting legal documents, and attending court hearings in both immigration and state courts. The attorney will work closely with social services staff to provide comprehensive support to the immigrant youth population. The caseload will encompass both defensive (removal) and affirmative cases, focusing on asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) for unaccompanied minors. Supervision of law students and volunteers may also be part of the role.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Bar License to practice in California
  • Proficiency in Spanish

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a supervisory capacity
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in immigration law
  • Experience with U visa, VAWA, SIJS, and/or asylum cases (including law school clinic experience and internships)

Additional Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated commitment to low-income legal services and immigrant rights
  • Ability to effectively engage with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Strong communication skills with government representatives

Benefits:

The benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance, along with a retirement plan, flexible spending accounts for healthcare and commuting expenses, and reimbursement for preventive wellness activities. Generous paid time off is provided, in addition to office closures for state and federal holidays and a winter break. A relocation stipend is also available.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily in-office, with the option to work remotely one day per week after the initial training and onboarding period.

Application Process:

Interested candidates should submit their cover letter and resume, clearly indicating their Spanish language proficiency.

This position requires in-office work. Please include information regarding relocation plans if applicable.
