Minnesota Energy Resources is a key provider of natural gas services across numerous communities in Minnesota.

MERC, a division of WEC Energy Group, is looking for a skilled HVAC and Appliance Repair Technician for our Rochester, Minnesota location.

Position Overview

The Field Technician III role is part of a broader job family that includes Field Technician IV and Field Technician II positions.

This job family encompasses both regulated and non-regulated responsibilities, which include:

  • Regulated Duties: Conduct maintenance, repairs, construction, and emergency responses on gas transmission and distribution systems. Provide operational support for gas meter management, including installation, removal, reading, and replacement, as well as investigating gas leaks and carbon monoxide incidents.
  • Non-regulated Duties: Diagnose, repair, service, and install HVAC systems and appliances. Carry out inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment.

This position requires being on call and available for standby duty 24/7 on a rotating schedule. Shift work may be necessary based on operational needs.

Promote and sell non-regulated service contracts.

This role is part of a job family where experience will determine the level of the position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, service, and install HVAC systems and appliances. Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment.
  • Install, service, and routinely replace various gas metering devices, pressure regulators, relief valves, and filters.
  • Identify, locate, and mark all natural gas mains, service lines, and fuel lines within the transmission and distribution system.
  • Perform odorant testing, system leak surveys, cathodic protection, and mandated annual inspections, while providing properly documented reports.
  • Assist with the construction or replacement of natural gas mains and service lines.
  • Set, adjust, and monitor various pressures used for the delivery of natural gas, including farm taps and pressure testing of facilities.
  • Provide operational support for gas meter installation, removal, reading, and replacement.
  • Investigate gas leaks and respond to emergencies related to gas leaks and carbon monoxide incidents.
  • Locate gas transmission and distribution systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, HSED, or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and compliance with the company's driving requirements.

The Field Technician III position necessitates one year of relevant experience, while the Field Technician II role requires three years of relevant experience, which may include:

  • Familiarity with natural gas distribution systems and gas meter maintenance and repair.
  • Experience in the installation, repair, and servicing of both gas and electric heating appliances for residential and commercial clients.
  • Understanding of mechanical and/or electrical principles.
  • Experience in customer relations, customer service, and/or sales.
  • Proficiency in operating electronic devices (e.g., computers, Toughpads).

Selected employees in this classification may be required to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL).

Depending on assigned tasks, certain Field Technicians may need to undergo additional training and medical testing for safety and PPE requirements.
