Overview

This role is part of a Direct Hire Authority initiative.

Positions are available within the Engineering Branches across various regions.

Key Responsibilities

As a Nuclear Reactor Safety Inspector, you will engage in comprehensive training and development to achieve certification as an NRC inspector. Your primary responsibility will be to conduct inspections and assessments of a diverse range of engineering programs, performance metrics, and support activities related to reactor facilities. This includes areas such as design validation, facility modifications, and equipment evaluation, with a focus on either 1) mechanical systems and components or 2) electrical systems and components. You will be tasked with planning, executing, documenting, and coordinating inspection findings in accordance with NRC guidelines.

Your duties will encompass, but are not limited to:

  1. Preparing for inspections by determining the scope and gathering necessary information through direct observation and verification of activities.
  2. Conducting both routine and complex inspections, including reviews of allegations, event responses, and targeted inspections to ensure compliance with NRC regulations and procedures.
  3. Drafting detailed reports of inspection outcomes to assess operational safety, evaluate the effectiveness of management control programs, and confirm adherence to regulatory standards.
  4. Performing additional tasks to support the regional inspection program, including enforcement actions and performance evaluations.

Successful candidates will be assigned to one of the regional offices based on their geographic preferences indicated during the application process.

Employment Conditions

  • A background investigation leading to a security clearance is required for new hires.
  • Not subject to Confidential Financial Disclosure reporting requirements.
  • Subject to security ownership restriction reporting at specific grade levels.

Qualifications must be met by the specified deadline for consideration.

New hires will undergo a two-year trial period to evaluate their suitability for continued employment, with preference-eligible veterans serving a one-year trial period.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the educational and experience requirements as outlined below:

For GG-11: Typically, two to three years of specialized experience post-bachelor's degree, with at least one year equivalent to the GG-9 level, or three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD, or a PhD in relevant fields. Combinations of education and experience may be considered.

For GG-12: Generally, four years of specialized experience post-bachelor's degree or at least two years of post-master's degree professional engineering experience, with one year equivalent to the GG-11 level.

For GG-13: Typically, five or more years of specialized experience post-bachelor's degree or at least three years of post-master's degree professional engineering experience, with one year equivalent to the GG-12 level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as work experience in materials/mechanical engineering or electrical engineering relevant to performing inspections at nuclear facilities. Candidates should provide a detailed account of their specialized experience and qualifications in their resumes.

The ideal candidate will have inspection experience in one of the following areas:

A. Materials/Mechanical Engineering including aspects such as weld design, non-destructive testing, degradation analysis, and repair evaluations. Candidates should demonstrate:

  1. Ability to identify and resolve materials-related design and performance issues.
  2. Knowledge of welding principles and non-destructive examination techniques.
  3. Experience with in-service inspection programs for mechanical components.
  4. Capability to evaluate material degradation and implement mitigation strategies.
  5. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

B. Electrical Engineering including systems related to power generation and plant controls. Candidates should demonstrate:

  1. Ability to evaluate complex technical design issues and resolve them effectively.
  2. Knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
  3. Experience with electrical systems and cyber security in nuclear settings.
  4. Capability to address design-related issues in electrical systems.
  5. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
