This is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, with opportunities for performance-based bonuses.

Key Responsibilities

Case Management:

  • Oversee family law cases from initiation to conclusion, including matters such as divorce, child custody, child support, alimony, and adoption.
  • Organize and maintain client files, ensuring all documentation is current and readily accessible.
  • Monitor deadlines, court dates, and significant milestones throughout case progress.

Document Preparation:

  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, affidavits, subpoenas, and discovery responses.
  • Assist in creating marital settlement agreements, parenting plans, and other family law documents.
  • Prepare and organize trial exhibits and documentation for hearings and trials.

Client Interaction:

  • Act as a primary contact for clients, providing updates on case status and addressing inquiries.
  • Coordinate and schedule client meetings, consultations, and depositions.
  • Assist in gathering and organizing client information and necessary documentation.

Legal Research:

  • Conduct legal research on family law topics, including state and federal regulations and case law.
  • Prepare legal memos and summaries based on research findings to assist attorneys.

Court Filings:

  • File legal documents with the appropriate courts, ensuring adherence to local rules and procedures.
  • Track and follow up on filed documents, ensuring timely actions are taken.

Discovery Process:

  • Support the discovery process by drafting requests, responding to inquiries, and managing document production.
  • Organize and analyze discovery materials, including financial records and relevant documents.

Mediation and Settlement Support:

  • Prepare for mediation sessions, including necessary documentation and exhibits.
  • Assist attorneys in settlement negotiations by preparing proposals and organizing information.

Trial Preparation:

  • Support attorneys in trial preparation, including witness preparation and organizing exhibits.
  • Attend trials and hearings as needed, providing assistance to attorneys and clients.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Track billable hours and prepare time entries for client billing.
  • Assist with administrative duties, such as scheduling appointments and managing calendars.

Confidentiality and Ethics:

  • Maintain client confidentiality and handle sensitive information with care.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and standards in the legal profession.
Qualifications

Educational Background:

  • Associate's degree or certificate in paralegal studies from an ABA-accredited program (Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • Relevant coursework or certification in family law is advantageous.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience as a paralegal, with a strong preference for family law experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cases in areas such as divorce, child custody, and alimony.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and case management software.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with e-filing systems and court procedures.

Legal Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive understanding of family law statutes, regulations, and court procedures.
  • Strong grasp of legal terminology, principles, and practices in family law.

Organizational Skills:

  • Exceptional organizational abilities, capable of managing multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in document preparation and case management.

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to interact professionally with clients, attorneys, and court personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of handling sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.

Analytical Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of reviewing and analyzing complex legal documents.
  • Ability to conduct thorough legal research and provide clear, concise summaries.

Time Management:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Proven track record of working independently with minimal supervision.

Ethical Standards:

  • Commitment to high ethical standards, including confidentiality and integrity in handling sensitive client information.
  • Understanding of the ethical responsibilities of a paralegal in a family law context.

Certifications (Optional but Preferred):

  • Paralegal certification (CP, CLA, or RP) is preferred.
  • State-specific paralegal certification or licensing if applicable.

Adaptability:

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Willingness to learn and stay informed about changes in family law and legal procedures.
