Duties Summary

The role involves undertaking complex engineering tasks related to the formulation, evaluation, and/or assessment of electrical designs, schematics, and specifications to ensure they meet the electrical code and departmental standards. Responsibilities include approving designs, plans, specifications, materials, or methods proposed, and executing other related duties as necessary.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy available.

Examples of Duties
  • Evaluates various electrical designs, plans, and specifications submitted by private and government architects and engineers for compliance with design standards and regulations.
  • Provides recommendations for amendments to the Electrical Code.
  • Approves or suggests approval or rejection of plans and specifications requiring decisions and interpretations affecting design or procedures.
  • Develops and analyzes designs for electrical and electronic systems for power distribution, street lighting, traffic signals, alarm, and communication systems.
  • Assesses electrical systems designs for various types of buildings and structures, including water systems and deep-well pumps.
  • Verifies the accuracy of calculations, determinations, and assumptions regarding requirements, loads, and capacities.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for major buildings and structures that involve intricate computations and challenging interpretations of the Electrical Code.
  • Collaborates with architects, engineers, and departmental personnel on matters related to the application and technical interpretation of the Electrical Code.
  • Travels to construction project sites to conduct field and office studies of electrical systems and prepares reports with necessary recommendations.
  • Drafts complex contracts and specifications for equipment as required.
  • Initiates inquiries and evaluates reports on characteristics and applications of new or alternative materials and devices to determine their acceptability.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports on technical engineering matters.
  • May oversee lower-level professional and sub-professional staff.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in electrical engineering.
  • Three (3) years of professional electrical engineering experience.
  • Registration as a professional electrical engineer in the United States at the time of application.
  • Ability to travel independently to various locations, which may be fulfilled by holding a valid driver's license.
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of electrical engineering; engineering mathematics; techniques for designing electrical and electronic systems; provisions of the National Electrical Code; functions and uses of new materials and devices; sources of engineering information.

Ability to: Prepare and review electrical plans and specifications; design complex electrical layouts and systems; conduct field studies and inspections; analyze electrical designs; interpret technical provisions of the Electrical Code; prepare engineering reports and correspondence; maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
