Position Overview

This is a term position anticipated to last more than one year, with an initial appointment expected to endure at least 13 months. Extensions may be granted up to a total of four years, contingent upon regulatory changes regarding term appointments. Please note that term positions do not confer permanent status within the Federal service.

The National Park Service reserves the right to extend the duration of this appointment based on regulatory updates. Such extensions are at the agency's discretion and do not imply a guarantee of continued employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a working leader within the maintenance team.
  • Delegate daily tasks to team members based on instructions from the supervisor.
  • Exhibit proper work techniques and collaborate with others to establish an efficient work pace.
  • Ensure availability of necessary plans, materials, supplies, equipment, and tools.
  • Advise the supervisor on operational needs based on work requests.
  • Address worker inquiries or seek necessary information from the supervisor regarding project-related issues.
  • Monitor work progress and completion to ensure adherence to supervisor instructions and deadlines.
  • Report on progress and any delays to the supervisor, as well as overall operational issues.
  • Enforce safety and housekeeping protocols.
  • Engage in hands-on maintenance and repair tasks involving grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, utilizing various trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and painting.
  • Conduct electrical repairs and troubleshoot wiring, fixtures, and controls using appropriate tools and methods.
  • Identify faults and replace or install controls, relays, switches, fixtures, and wiring in compliance with the National Electrical Code.
  • Operate various machinery, including dump trucks, forklifts, and backhoes.
  • Install and repair plumbing fixtures and systems, including drainage and gas lines.
  • Maintain and operate automatic or manually controlled pumps and generators.
  • Perform carpentry tasks, including repairs and construction of structures.
  • Paint surfaces using various application methods.
  • Mix and apply concrete for various construction needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness in comfort stations and campgrounds; manage waste disposal.

Physical Requirements:

Work involves physical activities such as climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds. The role may require working in uncomfortable positions and from heights.

Work Environment:

Tasks are performed both indoors and outdoors, often in conditions involving dirt, fumes, and extreme weather. Protective equipment may be necessary to mitigate risks associated with the work.

Employment Conditions:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is subject to a background investigation.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is mandatory for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for operating government vehicles.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is expected.
  • Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
  • A one-year trial period may be necessary.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Travel and relocation expenses are the responsibility of the employee.
  • Applicants must meet age and educational requirements.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker Leader with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in carpentry, painting, electrical work, cement work, and plumbing.
  • Capability to lead a team effectively.
