JOB SUMMARY

The Student Support Specialist is responsible for overseeing the behavior and safety of assigned students by implementing behavior modification strategies, adhering to school regulations, and following The Foundation Schools' policies. This role is essential in assisting students to reduce and prevent inappropriate behaviors. The Specialist accompanies students throughout their daily activities, providing support in academic tasks and behavioral objectives. Accurate documentation of student progress and activities is a critical aspect of this position. The Specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to execute lesson plans and meet Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Additionally, they contribute to team efforts by participating in meetings, committees, and special projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Monitor and document the assigned student's daily activities, ensuring adherence to behavioral expectations and academic progress.
  • Utilize effective behavior management techniques to assist the student in minimizing inappropriate behaviors.
  • Adapt interactions based on the student's diagnoses and academic performance to fulfill IEP requirements.
  • Support the student in completing both individual and group assignments, facilitating their engagement and interaction in the classroom.
  • Possess a foundational understanding of various academic subjects to aid students with their coursework.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and foster a respectful environment with all students.
  • Encourage student participation and ownership of their learning by reinforcing classroom expectations and standards.
  • Provide constructive feedback to educators and team members to identify and address student needs effectively.
  • Assist in creating a safe and stimulating learning atmosphere by preparing classroom materials and performing clerical tasks.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions for students between classes, during meal times, and at arrival and departure times.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how disabilities affect learning and behavior, adjusting strategies to meet IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) requirements.
  • Implement the behavior management system and school policies to model appropriate conduct for students.
  • Identify potential behavioral issues proactively to maintain a conducive learning environment.
  • Ensure student safety and security through vigilant supervision at all times.
  • Uphold student confidentiality in accordance with The Foundation Schools' confidentiality policies.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Preferred qualifications include related coursework or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience or training in special education or similar environments for children and adolescents is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) are advantageous.

  • Proficient in using basic office equipment such as computers, telephones, and copiers.
  • Capable of completing reports and data entry using various software applications.
  • Ability to move and handle supplies with light lifting as needed.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor in interactions with students, colleagues, families, and community partners.
  • Work collaboratively and positively with others.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and adhere to professional standards, including appropriate attire and punctuality.
  • Demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.
